    How to Create Website Shortcut in Windows


    This tutorial will show you different ways to create a website shortcut that will open in a web browser of your choice in Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 10.

    OPTION ONE

    Create Website Shortcut on Desktop in Google Chrome that Always Opens in Google Chrome







    OPTION TWO

    Create Website Shortcut on Desktop that Always Opens in Default Web Browser


    1 Open Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Firefox.

    2 Open the website (ex: https://www.tenforums.com) you want to create a desktop shortcut for in the web browser.

    3 Drag and drop the icon just to the left of the address bar (where the website URL is shown) on the desktop. (see screenshots below)

    4 You will now have a desktop shortcut to the website. (see screenshot below)

    You can rename, change icon, and move this desktop shortcut to where you like if wanted.

    OPTION THREE

    Create Website Shortcut that Always Opens in Default Web Browser


    1 Right click or press and hold on your desktop, click/tap on New, and click/tap on Shortcut.

    2 Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the URL address of the website (ex: https://www.tenforums.com) you want to create a shortcut to into the location field, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

    3 Type a name you want for this website shortcut, and click/tap on Finish. (see screenshot below)

    4 You will now have a desktop shortcut to the website. (see screenshot below)

    You can change icon and move this desktop shortcut to where you like if wanted.

    OPTION FOUR

    Create Custom Website Shortcut that Always Opens in Internet Explorer


    1 Right click or press and hold on your desktop, click/tap on New, and click/tap on Shortcut.

    2 Type the location you want to use below, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

    "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" URL

    OR

    (Opens in new Internet Explorer InPrivate window)
    "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" -private URL

    Substitute URL in the location above with the actual website (ex: https://www.tenforums.com) you want to create a shortcut to.

    For example: "%ProgramFiles%\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" https://www.tenforums.com

    3 Type a name you want for this website shortcut, and click/tap on Finish. (see screenshot below)

    4 If you like, you can change icon, Pin to Taskbar, Pin to Start, add to All apps, add to Quick Launch, assign a keyboard shortcut to, or move this shortcut to where you like for easy use. (see screenshot below)

    OPTION FIVE

    Create Custom Website Shortcut that Always Opens in Microsoft Edge Chromium







    OPTION SIX

    Create Custom Website Shortcut that Always Opens in Google Chrome


    1 Right click or press and hold on your desktop, click/tap on New, and click/tap on Shortcut.

    2 Type the location you want to use below if you have Google Chrome installed at the default location in 32-bit or 64-bit Windows, and click/tap on Next. (see screenshot below)

    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" URL

    OR

    (Opens in new Google Chrome window)
    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -new-window URL

    (Opens in current Google Chrome Incognito window)
    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -incognito URL

    OR

    (Opens in new Google Chrome Incognito window)
    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -incognito -new-window URL

    OR

    (Opens in current Google Chrome Guest window)
    "%ProgramFiles%\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe" -guest URL

    OR

    (Opens in new Google Chrome Guest window)

    Substitute URL in the location above with the actual website (ex: https://www.tenforums.com) you want to create a shortcut to.

    Context menu shortcuts for opening .url files in specific browsers


    An extremely useful consolidation of browser shortcut options. Thanks.

    You can also use the Context menu to open selected .url files in specific browsers.
    [There might be variations of these shortcuts that work with .website files but I have not considered them because I don't use them]


    1 Context menu [SendTo] shortcut to open .url file in Edge

    If you want to open an existing url file in Edge instead of your default browser [without creating a specific hard-wired Edge shortcut for it - Option 5 above] then you can write a short vbs file and put a link to it in SendTo. Any url file can then be opened in Edge using the Context menu.

    2 Context menu [SendTo] shortcut to open .url file in Firefox

    The Firefox equivalent SendTo is simply a conventional link with this as its Target property
    "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe" -tab %*
    [same for both 32 bit and 64 bit Windows]
    [the %* allows it to be used for several selected urls at once]
    [the -tab entry avoids also having an unnecessary blank FF tab opening up at the same time]


    3 Context menu [SendTo] shortcut to open .url file in IE

    The IE equivalent SendTo is simply a conventional link with this as its Target property
    "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe"
    [note that no %1 or %* is used - I have not needed to set this one up for more than a single url at a time and suspect that I'd have to send them through a vbs or batch file if I needed to do so]
