got it, not needed then. spotmau or slack can also get the logs. that was the reason for asking. i hate to download and burn a dvd if i don't need to.

just tried the cd i made from the seagate iso again, and it did nothing when i didn't change it to ata, so i installed the windows version of the tool. i tried it twice but it isn't finding any drives. it got to 71% again , but this time i got a picture of the error message and it said: "The installation failed in the FIRST_BOOT phase with an error during the MIGRATE_DATA operation."

from what i am reading, it looks like a problem with the windows update service. i have tried to find that fixit i used to use on that, but it's been a long time for 7 for me. i may jst reinstall the installer, maybe that will take care of it.

anyway, here is the cbs log it gave up, would you like any others to look at?

Please post the section that you read about BIOS changes required for Sea Tools where you had modified settings.

See the steps in the earlier post.

Was the prior upgrade attempt with the upgrade assistant or with a flash drive?

i downloaded the tool from microsoft.

the steps in the other post were all taken except the seagate tool being run. i am having trouble seeing just how that tool is going to fix anything in the update service, like the logs are pointing to. am i wrong in my interpretation? if so, please point out my errors. i love learning, but this has been a long battle that i am not even charging for. i like doing favors for my friends, but after two days it ceases to be fun. i appreciate your help as well.

when i set the ahci to ata, it freaked out, blue screened, went into repair mode and froze. it finally went into attempting repairs, failed, and shut off. i changed the ata back to ahci and it booted, although went into the configuring from windows updates.

Please post the link that led to ACHI > ATA > ACHI

it's not a link, it's in the readme file that came in the zip folder i grabbed from the website you posted the link to. it also won't run when i boot to the cd i burned using it. again, how does that affect the windows update service and am i wrong for even looking there for the problem?

or i could just read the logs again and concentrate on the windows update. funny thing about logs, they tell you what happened. you just have to know how to read them. i used to, but haven't for years, so i came here for some help. what i learned is that you have more than 254 windows updates on a fully patched windows 7 pro machine. when i tried to run another cumulative update i have downloaded, it started updating. so, now, i have started again to upgrade. it may well fail again, but if it does, the logs will tell me why. and it shouldn't be because of windows update. again, i appreciate all the help, but you can save a lot of work for the users you're helping if you look at the logs closely. next time someone with an upgrade issue like this, with an error code pointing to windows updates, it may just be because the windows 7 update server turned off before they were all installed, due to a broken installer, another thing the logs tells you if you look at them.

It takes a lot of time to scan logs.
So the tutorials were posted first on non troubleshooting options.

These logs were not available: DM, Panther, etc.
