    Windows Update 1809 Fails - Error 0xc00000fd

    Hello.

    I am having trouble updating Windows 10 to 1809 (currently on 1803).

    This is a Zoostorm PC and has never had any issues updating before.

    Processor is an Intel Celeron CPU G540.

    I have tried about 15 times and it always fails on 37% and then restarts.

    On two occasions, the screen has gone black and I was forced to restart (the second time this happened, I left it for 13 hours just in case).

    Any ideas?

    So far I have tried:

    * Simply using Windows Update.

    * Attempted in Safe Mode.

    * Using the Media Creation Tool (via USB).

    * Using the Update Assistant.

    * I have unplugged ethernet during install.

    * I have unplugged all USB devices during install.

    * Stopped as much non-Windows software as possible running during install.

    * Disabled AVG anti-virus.

    * Ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter - says the database 'may' be corrupted but doesn't do anything about it.

    * Deleted $WINDOWS.~BT folder.

    * Deleted SoftwareDistribution folder.

    * Deleted catroot2 folder.

    * Deleted all other temporary files.

    * System File Checker finds no problems.

    * DISM restore health etc finds no issues.

    * Reset Winsock.

    * Started and restarted: bits, wuauserv, appidsvc and cryptsvc via a computer restart.

    * Checked the latest SSU is installed (it is).

    setuperr.log is attached.

    setupact.log is here.

    Thanks.

    * Ran the Windows Update Troubleshooter - says the database 'may' be corrupted but doesn't do anything about it.
    Hi, preliminary step:
    Reset Windows Update in Windows 10 | Tutorials

    then run the troubleshooter again to see if that's fixed.

    Please run
    CHKDSK C: /SCAN
    and post the results.

    How much free space do you have on C: ?

    * Using the Media Creation Tool (via USB).
    Can you confirm this means you have attempted the upgrade using a previously downloaded iso/created bootable disk?

    You may need to first do an in-place upgrade repair install of your existing build using an 1803 iso, given the number and nature of the failures.

    You can't start this from Safe Mode- but you could try a clean boot (sounds as if you may have done so).

    Noted this:
    MIG Relocation pattern skipped because enumeration root is not present: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\アクセサリ\エンターテイメント [Plus! CD ラベル メーカー.lnk]

    @zbook will wish to take this thread on.

    * I've reset Windows Update and run the troubleshooter. I still get 'potential Windows Update database error detected'

    * I've run CHKDSK C: /SCAN and it says 'Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems'.

    * There is 403 GB free disk space.

    * re/
    the Media Creation Tool (via USB) - I have tried upgrading using this logged into Windows. It doesn't work.

    When booting from USB, it says I can only do a clean install and can't perform an upgrade. I've not tried via a DVD though.

    * I have tried a clean boot (no difference).

    * I've tried locating this file:
    MIG Relocation pattern skipped because enumeration root is not present: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\アクセサリ\エンターテイメント [Plus! CD ラベル メーカー.lnk]

    but it doesn't exist.

    1) The next version of Windows is likely to be released in March/April 2019 which is approximately 30 -60 days.

    2) What are the status of the files on the computer?
    a) Had the files been backed up to another drive or to the cloud?
    b) Had a backed up image been mad and saved to another disk drive or to the cloud?
    c) If you had to perform a reset save files or equivalent (save files, reinstall drivers and applications) would that be a viable fix?
    d) If you had to perform a reset remove files or equivalent (delete files, reinstall drivers and applications) would that be a viable fix?

    3) Some options to consider:
    a) the time to troubleshoot versus the time for a reset
    b) troubleshooting for Windows 1809 versus 1903 versus both 1809 and 1903

    4) Troubleshooting may or may not work and often takes a lot of time for failed Windows upgrades.
    5) A reset save files or a custom install or clean install may likely take < 24 hours.

    6) This is a link on reset save files and reset remove files:

    1) For troubleshooting:

    2) For all steps make sure that images are posted into the thread.
    3) For any problems posting images please use share links (one drive, drop box, or google drive)

    4) Steps may be repeated so that there are images of the results in the thread

    5) There is a log collector used in another forum that an be used to scan and read the computer files.
    6) Before using the software make sure the default language is English:

    11) Save the backup image to another disk drive or to the cloud

    12) Make a brand new restore point:
    Create System Restore Point in Windows 10 | Tutorials

    13) Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

    System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums | Tutorials
    In the left corner below in your post you find 'My System Specs'.

    24) Make sure that all upgrade attempts are performed using a Windows 10 iso and not using the support assistant
    25) And make sure that all Windows updates are deferred until after a successful upgrade

    26) List all non-Microsoft antivirus software (always on and manual) that had been installed or installed and uninstalled since the last successful Windows upgrade

    Thanks for the reply.

    1) This is a computer used as a weather station so runs 24/7 although reboots once a day. The trouble is, after said automated reboot it sometimes tries (and always fails) to install the latest version of Windows. This often crashes the PC too. So waiting until March/April isn't really an option.

    2)

    a) All files are backed up.

    b) The backups are on another disk.

    c) and d) are not viable as this PC has taken a long time of tweaking to get weather and webcam commands going. I'd don't wish to do that again.

    3) a) and b) - see above. I'd rather try and fix the problem than resetting.

    Thanks for the other points.

    I'm not at the PC now but will start the troubleshooting steps and post here again soon.

    Post #1 “I have tried about 15 times and it always fails on 37% and then restarts.”
    --- Is it possible to see what stage the attempted upgrade is at 37%?

    Post #3 “When booting from USB, it says I can only do a clean install and can't perform an upgrade
    --- That’s more than intriguing to me as I haven’t seen that issue yet.
    --- In post #1, you mention no problems are found via System File Checker and DISM restore health etc.
    --- zbook’s recommendations look very good as usual: please create a system image backup as recommended..

    By this stage, it is at the dark blue, fullscreen update process.

    Will any logs show where it gets to at 37%?

    Sorry - I should have been more clear:

    The reason it crashes is due to it trying to update.

    Sometimes when the update fails it restarts the machine, other times it hangs/crashes.

    I am trying to fill in system specs automatically as per the instructions here: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorial...tem-specs.html

    The Internet Explorer login screen opens, I try and enter my username and password and it says they are invalid.

    Any ideas?

    --- Unfortunately I don't know if there are any logs to find out about that.
    --- I'm hoping to do a Windows Update on a computer this Fri, if that happens I'll see if I can determine what stage it's at by viewing what's going on well before the 37%.

    'The reason it crashes is due to it trying to update.
    Sometimes when the update fails it restarts the machine, other times it hangs/crashes."
    --- You have tried both Windows Update process and MCT via USB.
    --- I would wait to see what zbook's troubleshooting procedures lead to.
