How to Restore Default Services in Windows 10

    information   Information
A service is an application type that runs in the system background without a user interface and is similar to a UNIX daemon process. Services provide core operating system features, such as Web serving, event logging, file serving, printing, cryptography, and error reporting.

This tutorial provides you with registry downloads that will completely restore any of the default services and their settings in Windows 10. This can be handy if a service was deleted by mistake, is missing, or had it's properties set improperly.

You must be signed in as an administrator to be able to restore default services.

    Note   Note
Services are located in the registry key below.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services

    Here's How:

    1. Click/tap on the link under the Service Display Name column in the table below of the service that you would like to restore to download it's .reg file.

    2. Save the .reg file to your desktop.

    3. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

    Tip   Tip
If the .reg file does not merge and nothing happens, then you will need to check in Default Programs to make sure the .reg file extension has its Current Default program set as Registry Editor (C:\Windows\regedit.exe). Afterwards, try merging the REG file again.

    4. If prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK.

    5. Repeat all of the above steps if you would like to restore another service.

    6. When finished, restart the computer to apply.

    7. When finished, you can delete the downloaded .reg file(s) if you like.

    Note   Note
To download all available default services below in one ZIP folder, click on the Download button below and save the ZIP file to your desktop. Open the ZIP file, and extract (drag and drop) the REG file for the file extension you want to restore to your desktop. Now you could just pick up at step 3 above.

    A very important tutorial Shawn
It will save time from searching all over for some
Too bad Microsoft hasn't built a restore default settings switch for services, like the Firewall has.

    Hello Ethelwulf,

Sure you could do that, or export the registry key for the service as a backup. If you edit the downloadable .reg file in the tutorial, you'll see which key to export in your registry for the service.
