How to Change Window Background Color in Windows 10

The window color is the background color used in classic Win32 system windows, dialogs, and property pages in Windows 10.

The window background color is white by default in Windows 10.

This tutorial will show you how to change the window background color used for your account in Windows 10.

The window background color you set will only be applied to your current theme. If you change your theme, it will also change the window background color to what is set or saved for the selected theme.

This will not affect the windows of third party apps or programs.

EXAMPLE: Window background color when changed to "yellow"

These are some of the system windows, dialogs, and property pages I found the window background color change in so far. Please feel free to post a screenshot here of other items you notice the window background color change in.

    Here's How:

1 Press the Win+R keys to open Run, type regedit into Run, and click/tap on OK to open Registry Editor.

2 Navigate to the key below in the left pane of Registry Editor. (see screenshot below)

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Colors

3 In the right pane of the Colors key, double click/tap on the Window string value to modify it. (see screenshot above)

4 Enter the 3 Red Green Blue (ex: 255 255 0) numbers (see tip box below) for the color (ex: yellow) you want, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshot below)

The default RGB value is 255 255 255 for the color white.

To find out the Red Green Blue (RGB) numbers for the custom color you want:

    A) Open Paint (mspaint.exe).

    B) Click/tap on the Edit colors button in the Home tab.

    C) Select a color, and adjust the color to what you want.

    D) The Red Green Blue numbers for the color will be at the bottom right corner of the Edit Colors dialog.

    E) When finished, you can close Edit Colors and Paint.

    5 Close Registry Editor.

6 Sign out and sign in to apply.

7 You may need to repeat this tutorial until you find a window background color that looks good to you.

    That's it,
    Shawn Brink

Some points to note about this, which I've used since Win 8:

    a. The colour is lost after resuming from sleep or hibernation
    b. It does not apply to
    - windows rendered by file explorer
    - dialogues such as open/save as dialogues that look as if they are file explorer dialogues but are actually rendered by a 3rd party program.

    Resolutions
    a. To reapply the colour automatically on resuming, I have a scheduled task triggered on resume to reapply a theme previously saved with my chosen background colour.

About 4 years ago someone proposed another way to fix that- I've not found the tenforums post again.

    b. For file explorer- related windows and dialogues, use Qttabbar (free). One of its many functions is to allow you to colour various regions of a file explorer window.

Hello, unfortunately your post is unclear.

    Do you possibly mean:
"When I use Windows dark mode, gif transparency is affected (how?) if I change the background colour of windows.

If I use light mode, this does not happen. Is there a way to fix this in dark mode?"

    And please
    a. post a screenshot of your gif in both light and dark mode illustrating what you see
    b. upload said gif so someone might try this.

Note: I don't use dark mode, so you would need someone else to try this.
Few people change the background colour of their Windows, so it's less likely anyone else has encountered this.
Note: to change file explorer's background, use Qttabbar (free) by Quizo.

(You might find it easier to be clearer if you
    a. consider the person reading your post- your audience - how they will read your post
    b. Type in your own language, then use e.g. Google translate).

    Thanks.

As u can see, the gif have a violet background and its not a bad saving gif problem because on another comp it show trasparent but this happen when i changed windows background colour changing from white to grey. If i setup another windows theme and overwrite che custom color i set, it back a normal gif but i want grey background and transparent gif. This happen in a visual basic 6 program
