    Upgrade woes

    G'day

Currently on 1909 and trying to upgrade to 20H2. I always do clean installs when moving on to a new version of Windows 10 and have thus far never experienced any issues using the DVD method.

I earlier began the process of creating a new ISO using the Media Creation Tool. That was fine, but when I went to burn the ISO to DVD (using the 'Burn disc image' option in Windows), it advised there was not enough space.

I've never used or burnt Dual Layer discs, but that's what Microsoft advises using in this type of scenario. Can the built-in image burner in Windows create these discs? If not, can someone recommend a tool for this.

Even better if someone could advise a way of downloading an ISO with exactly what I need so I can get it on my 4.7GB DVD, but I suspect that might not be possible.

    Thanks in advance

Are you averse to using a USB flash drive for some reason?

My PC doesn't have the option. Yes, it's that old, but still runs fine.

I wouldn't rush to 20H2 right now unless there's something about it you're burning to have. Also make a backup first if you don't already have one: Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

Practically all computers with usb 2.0 and above have a boot from usb option.

a detail description of your computer (Make, Model, Memory, Ports Usb and others)
may be necessary to advise you properly.

You probably don't have a Dual layer DVD burner either then.

You can use Kari's tutorial to create a WIM from the large ESD file in the ISO then create a new, much smaller ISO with just the Win 10 version you need:

Convert ESD file to WIM using DISM in Windows 10

Read through it and come back with any questions.

Edit: What you will do is reduce this:

    Code:
    C:\Users\ztruk>dism /Get-WimInfo /WimFile:I:\sources\install.esd

Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool
    Version: 10.0.19041.572

    Details for image : I:\sources\install.esd

    Index : 1
    Name : Windows 10 Home
    Description : Windows 10 Home
    Size : 15,496,272,979 bytes

Which is contained in sources\install.esd to a single version, Home or Pro most likely, that will be in sources\install.wim, replacing install.esd.

When I mount the 20H2 ISO, it's 4.6GB. Once you go through Kari's tutorial it will be 3GB or less.

You should update to 2004, in my opinion it`s much too soon to install 20H2. Give it another 4 or 5 months to work out any bugs.

There is no reason to keep doing clean installs. Unless you really like installing all your software all over again, and again, etc

Just download the 2004 Iso file, open it with windows explorer and click next, so much easier. No usb stick or DVD needed.

You can get 2004 from here if you don`t have it.

When performing a clean install all partitions are deleted and Windows with new partitions is installed.

Other methods can install a fresh version of Windows.

All of these methods require the reinstallation of drivers and applications.

    Refresh Windows 10
    Reset Windows 10
    Custom Install Windows 10
How to Restore Files from Windows.old Folder in Windows 10

    Download Windows 10 ISO File
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

This may be an option to create the DVD:
Create bootable USB installer if install.wim is greater than 4GB

I will second this - but first make a backup with the link I posted earlier or similar.

HP Pavilion p6324uk. There is no option to boot from USB drive in the boot menu.

I think that's what I'm looking for! Checking the PC specs, the DVD drive does burn Dual Layer DVD discs. Cheers.

I just do clean installs to save me any potential issues further down the road. I keep things light, so doesn't take me long to reinstall software, etc.
