I don't know what you may have configured or installed...
Do you have any display problems in Safe Mode?
Try a live boot disk- boot your PC from it, and then see if you still have a similar problem.
E.g. Kyhi's from the top of the Software and Apps section.
You need to separate hardware issues from software.
Failing that, you may need to get your video card tested.
Please see post #7 (post system specs in the "My Computer" section and post a URL or hyperlink)
After the computer reset what was the source for drivers?
Which drivers were installed from the computer manufacturer's website?
Which drivers were installed from the component manufacturer's websites?
Which drivers were installed from websites that automatically update drivers?
The problem has been resolved, thanks to everyone for help!
What happened is after it wouldn't show video for the thousandth time I got fed up and impulsively uninstalled the video card from the Device Manager, there was an option to delete the driver files, I ticked that, after I did this the image became low quality, as it does when a video card driver isn't installed, but video was working immediately, without a reboot.
After this I reinstalled the driver and everything has been working fine.
I got a new, unrelated problem now, but that's for another thread :)
I spoke too soon.
After about a week of working fine, moments ago the screen went black (only mouse pointer visible and movable), the podcast I was playing kept playing, so the computer was responsive. I waited a while and after nothing changed I just turned the computer off and back on and now I'm back to the same state of affairs. Videos don't show any image, large video files won't play.
This is gonna drive me nuts!
As the Issue has returned I can only suggest that you follow the advice I gave earlier to use the DDU program to completely remove all traces of the existing driver (The remove Driver files in the OS removal option can leave some remnants that may, or may not, cause future (the current), issues

What should I install in it's place, tho?
After I removed the device and deleted the driver I let Windows search for the driver online, presumably it was installing the latest one. What's my alternative?
I remember there used to be custom gaming drivers I sometimes used when I used to game. Omega, one of them was called. Might I try something like that? Any recommendations?
DDU will remove every part of the driver, including any linked files that the standard system uninstall can sometimes miss.
This state will allow you to install whichever driver you chose to a completely clean base.
If the first one you try still has an issue you can use DDU again to try another driver, and so on until you find the one that works best
From a display driver point of view, using DDU gives you the same effect as installing a driver to a fresh installed operating system.
Of course the fact that the issue has returned could indicate that the issue is due to an intermittent fault in the display hardware, which no amount of driver changes will cure ... this is of course not very likely
I would just add that if you use an older driver and it works, then stops working, please check that the driver has not been updated by Windows or the vendor.
