If you have any third party antivirus, firewall, or VPN software - they must be uninstalled first before doing the in-place-upgrade repair - please confirm if you do have any of these or not.
Try running the same "sfc /scannow" once again and see if it fails again or not.

Please create a new thread in the update area as it was already written by zBook.
Also upload the update log files from the CBS folder using the following path:
c:\Windows\logs
Copy and paste the CBS folder on your desktop, zip it and then upload it on WeTransfer and then share the link in your own thread.

:) EUREKA! Got IT! Used 'search', looked up many topics, then CBS.log files corrupt entries after sfc scan, found a DSIM command that fixed whatever was screwing up the machine. That command run in admin DOS as " Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth ". Took quite a while, after that was suggested a restart, after that ran win update, and it downloaded/installed 4 updates including the last one 20H2 Ver. 19042.844 (and it also fixed the HDD running at or near 100% since late last year, which I am sure is a good thing). This was one helluva issue I had. Truly was almost a retirement of this laptop. Guys, thanks for all the suggestions! Between all the attempts and all the reversals, it's all good now. :)

In the Tutorial, I noticed this...
The installation media (ex: ISO or USB) must be the same edition and same or newer build as your currently installed Windows 10. If it's not, then the repair install will fail.
So, if I wanted to attempt a Repair Install, does this mean that I'd have to stop updating Windows until the MCT file version catches up with mine?
And if so, how long before the MCT Tool might at least be equivalent to my version?

Not the answer to your question, but from this site you can get the latest patched up ISO. I've used the site before and it's trustworthy:
UUP dump
19042 - Browse known builds - UUP dump
The raw ingredients (ISOs and KBs) they use come from MS servers.
So my point is you could get the ISO from above site and use it to do the repair upgrade with latest version available - newer that what's available from the MS site often even .

Thank you. I had a quick look at that site, but there isn't an option for English UK, so I'd be reluctant to use the latest file there.
English UK options is there for the ISO. Try Select language for Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 20H2 (19042.868) amd64 - UUP dump then click the language pull-down on top left side under "Choose language Choose your desired language"
or start from 19042 - Browse known builds - UUP dump to get your desired 20H2 version.
or 19041 - Browse known builds - UUP dump for 2004
