Well, it does seem this is by no means simple! The machine was second-hand and I think W10 was installed under a vendor's licence. How do I establish exactly which ISO I need?

Regarding 'update' - the iso was downloaded from Ms so the update status presumably is correct? It would be a great help if Ms would indicate in the 'failure' what exactly has failed with the 'source'!

Note for SIW2 - install.wim has been replaced by install.esd

I will try the GB pack removal. I will obviously need to download a new US ISO.

Download the iso file, not the mct. That way you will get the install.wim

an esd can be decompressed to produce the wim.

I do not see an option to download the ISO without MCT?

Download Windows 10 ISO File from MS - TenForumsTutorials
I find Option 2 the most appropriate method.

I do this when I get a new computer and I choose the English international [the British English] version of the ISO [Step 9].
I do a clean install using an installation USB made from that ISO so that the language is correct.
I keep the ISO because it's handy for Repair installs later on [repair operations that overwrite system files]. By using that ISO for this job as well, I know that I'm not bastardising the installed language [which I once did by accident and had a few minor problems as a result such as spellchecking not working in this forum & other places].

    *** Repair install notes
    - A Repair install is also called an InPlace upgrade and is how many of us do the twice yearly Windows 10 Version updates.
    - A Repair install is a repair task not a reinstallation. Your installed applications and data should never be affected even though backups would still be advised.

I use the MCT to get both the .iso file download and the creation of the bootable USB drive of 8GB or more. The MCT file is small and when run gets to the page/s where choices can be made. I've never had an issue with getting Win10 and Win11 installs.

Thanks for all the tips so far, but
Question: In case I decide not to waste more time on the DISM, can someone please confirm:

Will any of the ISOs I have burnt complete a repair install of my system remembering DISM 'cannot find the source file'?
Having never done one, is it correct that I should not have to reinstall programmes following one?

Try the pages found by Search, particularly the first 2 listed:

It replaces all the existing system files with new ones from the installation media. It doesnt try and find the exact matching system files for the existing installation.

The previous windows namespace folders are moved into windows.old ( if there is enough space on the partition ). Theoretically your programs and settings are transferred to the new installation.

Usually it works well, but sometimes it refuses to proceed or to complete and rolls back.

I did it with win11 recently.

You can see the windows.old folder after the repair install

    inside the windows.old folder

The things I highlighted are called the windows namespace folders. The old ones are all there as you can see from the size.

That is the same way the repair install works in win7.
