Sluggish laptop -- any suggestions?

Experience score is fine. It dings it on Aero graphics for some reason, but general graphics is 9.9. Everything else is 8.9 or 9.1.

Does the Sluggish issues still happening?
I'm asking because during a major update all resources are used and temporary freezing and delays are normal.

I haven't tried switching back to normal boot yet. I have a major certification exam tomorrow so I won't be futzing with my computer for a bit.

I am relatively new to Win10, but long time user of Win7. About 3 months ago I bought a new laptop because I had a major hinge/case bottom failure. Even though this new laptop should be a rocket ship, at times it is not.

• HP Pavilion 17z (no touchscreen), Ryzen 5 3500U, 16 GB memory, 512 GB M.2 NVME
• Because HP installs tons of bloatware, I download a fresh copy of Win10 directly from Microsoft, put it on a flash drive (using the MS tools) and installed that.
• I am a very "vanilla" user. Chrome, Thunderbird, MS Paint, MS Snip (the old one), occasional LibreOffice Calc and Draw. No games of any kind.
• No third party anti-virus, but Acronis does run their anti_ransomeware_service.exe
• Occasionally, while typing in a Chrome text box, I will get 5 - 10 character ahead, and I am a very slow typist.
• I try to fire up perfmon /res but by the time it is up, about the only thing that looks "odd" (to me) is MSMpEng.exe taking >5% of the CPU. If I leave perfmon /res running, after one of these episode the CPU graph on the right hand side will so one or more cores/thread hitting 100% !!

I have googled around a lot and, after probably over 20 hours, found nothing "concrete" (although many other have mention MsMpEng occasionally going "rogue"). I have kind of given up and am just "living with it".

I do know, that if I ever buy/build another system it will not have a Microsoft OS on it !

(My Background : I have been using/programming/administrating computers for over 45 years. Everything from 8 bit embedded micro to large minis, to multiple RISC servers running 3 totally different flavors of UN*X at same time. My "gut" has been right many more time than wrong and actually been able to "smell out" hardware/software/system "issues" well in advance of trained, "certified" professional.)

You said you did a clean install. Clean install means boot from a Win 10 installation disk, deleting ALL partitions and proceeding. Is that what you did?
Open Device Manager. Is there any yellow alerts of missing drivers?

Update the specs in the "My Computer" section:

Include PSU. cooler, case, peripherals and anything attached to the computer by wired or wireless (mouse, keyboard, headset, printer, xbox, USB wireless network card, etc.)


1) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
2) sfc /scannow
3) dism /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth
4) dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
5) sfc /scannow
6) chkdsk /scan
7) wmic recoveros set autoreboot = false
8) wmic recoveros set DebugInfoType = 7
9) bcdedit /enum {badmemory}

10) When these have completed > right click on the top bar or title bar of the administrative command prompt box > left click on edit then select all > right click on the top bar again > left click on edit then copy > paste into the thread

11) Find a flash drive and download and install HP Diagnostics UEFI:

12) Remove the notebook battery and run the HP Diagnostics UEFI overnight in extensive or loop until failure.
The next AM if there were no failures insert the battery and run component tests as needed

Come on. Give me some credit ! I know what "clean install" means and that is what I did. No device driver "alerts".

Back to my system -- I've been running a normal boot for a few days and I'm not seeing the performance issues I had before. Apparently the SFC &whatever cleaned up whatever was slowing things down?

Unfortunately I have another issue -- likely hardware this time. Since this laptop was new, it would periodically (~ 1x/week) hang while in sleep mode. I'd have to power-cycle to wake it up. That was annoying but not intolerable. In the last few months it's gotten worse:
* Instead of hanging with black screen, it often hangs with rainbow-colored stripes sweeping down the screen.
* In the last two months it has started corrupting the CMOS when it hangs, forcing me to re-set BIOS settings.
* In the last month it's started blue-screening with a "DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS THAN OR EQUAL" error in atikmdag.sys -- twice while in sleep mode, once while in active use.

I can't afford to send the system off for service right now, but in December I plan to send it to HP and ask "What the heck??"

I said yesterday that my system seemed to be pretty snappy. Me and my big mouth. This morning it is at least as sluggish and slow as it was before.
