    Upgrade from Win 7 Pro Ver 6.1 to Win 10 Questions

    Good day/evening,

    PC specs listed at bottom of thread

    I'll be upgrading my PC using your tutorial "How to Upgrade to Windows 10" Upgrade to Windows 10 but have a couple of questions so that it will go as smooth as possible.

    Win 7 Pro Ver 6.1 on my PC appears to be corrupted and it shuts down randomly with BSOD errors BCCodes 116,117 and Description > A problem with your video hardware caused Windows to stop working correctly.

    1. Should I do a Win 7 Pro repair install first to repair any corrupted files, OR just go ahead with the Win 10 upgrade without doing the Win 7 repair install?

    2. Since I'm using six monitors, should I disconnect 5 monitors and run the install using just one monitor ? Ideally, I'd like to preserve the video configuration settings for the six monitors. Note, I am NOT running the latest NVIDIA driver. Sometimes, the latest NVIDIA driver updates buggers things up.

    3. I also have 4 instances of Metatrader 4 by Metaquotes (MT4) (forex trading software) with specific settings and would like to make sure they are carried forward during the upgrade. Any suggestions other than making sure a backup or image file is done ? Have you heard of any problems with MT4 settings or operation during a Win 7 to Win 10 upgrade ?

    I found this post from a while back, but nothing recent, maybe it's a non issue now?

    A trading application by MetaQuotes called MetaTrader will not launch if you use the 64-bit version. 32-bit version run just fine (I think ). This is the same issue that has occurred just before and during release of every new Windows 10 version. SIGH!!!

    thanks for your help,

    @kojak

    Use ShowKeyPlus to find your Windows 7 product key (if you don't know it).
    Product Key Number for Windows 7 - Find and See - Windows 7 Help Forums

    Then download the Media Creation Tool, here... https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
    ...and use the "tool" to create your Windows 10 installation media.

    Then just do a "Clean Install" of Windows 10, and when it asks (during install), just put in your Windows 7 key.

    DO NOT...

    1. Upgrade a broken Windows 7 to Windows 10
    2. Just use one monitor to install.
    3. Unhook the internet and all drives that you are NOT installing Windows 10 on.

    +1 clean install. If the system is in any way suspect that you think you should do a repair, why carry forward a flawed system. Upgrade would be a waste of time.

    ++Clean install++

    Use Belarc Adviser and/or ProduKey to reveal your product keys (if not kept).
    Backup personal data, of course.

    (I've known several users who are concerned about the Windows 7 > 10 activation to do the following ....
    - do an in situ upgrade for no other purpose than to activate the Win 10 installation with Microsoft. Once this is done, the user will never require license key details for any future installation of Win 10 on the same device.
    - then, immediately do a complete disk wipe and clean install of Win 10 which will be auto activated when the internet is connected (don't connect during installation, even when asked/prompted - leave it until installation is complete).

    EDIT : Or ..... remove the existing drive to keep the old system in tact. Do a clean install on a new drive using the Win 7 key to activate. Install and test your software - if it's problematic, you've always got the old drive to tre-install. Overcomes the risk ofa corrupted image not being able to be re-installed.

    OR

    Image the existing system to another drive, then test an insitu upgrade on the 2nd drive. You've got the originally drive to fall back on if it doesn't work.

    Your system is a little more complex than most, and if you've got concerns, you may have to do that little extra work to protect the old system.

    - Before you do anything, make a disk image of your current boot drive and save to one of your data drives. Recommended Macrium reflect free
    - Detach all other drives from the MB (SATA or power cable).
    - Make sure that you don't connect to the internet until win 10 is installed

    - If you want to do a upgrade keeping your data and programs, I suggest you first do a win 7 repair install (run win 7 setup from running windows 7). Don't need to install the updates (set WU no never check).
    - Then try an in place up grade (run win 10 setup from running windows 7).

    If win 7 repair install + Win 10 setup doesn't work properly:
    - Detach all other drives from the MB (SATA or power cable).
    - Make sure that you don't connect to the internet until win 10 is installed

    - Boot from Win 10 installation drive.
    - Go to install and select to install on same partition you have Win 7. All win 7 files and folders will be moved to a new Windows.old folder and a new and clean win 10 will be installed (when asked insert Win 7 pro key)
    - Once win 10 is installed and running, you can go to Windows.old\Users\name and move your data to the the new \users\name folder.
    - Windows.old folder can then be deleted.

    The only real reason to disconnect from the internet is if you want to setup a local account. If you're going to use a Microsoft account with the OS, there's no benefit in disconnecting from the internet.

    As a system builder I've done quite a few Windows installs and I've yet to disconnect from the internet.

    Peace 😎

    Thank you all for the feedback and the reminders to back up my C drive, which I've done already.

    I was hoping that installing Win10 on top of a corrupted Win7 would somehow reset and resolve any problems but that doesn't appear to be the case. And I can't risk mucking up my current set up.

    I'll just have to invest the time to do a clean install on a separate SSD. I've learned a lot over the last few years and will keep things simple on the new OS install, as it is used for work purposes.

    I'll probably use this Universal MediaCreation Tool which is a batch file that lets you download any version of Windows 10 directly from Microsoft.

    Which Windows 10 Pro version do you recommend installing that is stable and "trouble free" ?
    Are versions 2004 or 2009 OK to use ?

    "clean install on a separate SSD" suggests another drive available and most posts here recommend having on the one drive connected during the install, connect storage drives after Windows is working.

    I'm having no problems with Version 2009/20H2 on a few computers.

    "Trouble free" is subjective to a lot of variables as no two computers are exactly alike after they have left the store, just take your time and pay attention, it's usually cheap.

    Any new Win 10 version can be a good or bad surprise. I had a little issue upgrading from 2004 to 2010 (20h2) but it is working OK.
    As you're doing a clean install I would try to do using last version (2010 or 20h2)

    @zbook,
    I want to do a new install of Win10 on a separate SSD, but I would also like to keep Win7 for a little longer and therefore want to trouble shoot the BSOD.

    I'll start working on the steps outlined above. Thanks for the detailed instructions.

    @Berton, @Megahertz,

    Thank you. I know some Win10 versions are more problematic than others, so knowing which one is most stable is helpful.
