Not having success in viewing computer monitor on TV

Unfortunately, right now it looks like it is all a moot issue. I have tried another HDMI cable with the same 'NO SIGNAL' result. Have updated driver for my ATI Radeon video card which has been no help. A look at the Display settings indicates there is only one device available. It does not find any other devices. I seem to be going from bad to worse!!!!! Attempt at changing resolutions have been no help. Do not understand the last two questions you have posed relating to computer output versus TV input???? It was no help that I was at one point going between the Windows 7 and Windows 10 systems in trying to get this to work. I merely confused myself and have lost track of what I have and have not tried but I thought that the Windows 7 did at one time show another device.

I was asking how you hooked up your computer to your TV. Here is how I hooked up mine.

I used a DVI to HDMI video cable.

Output on computer was DVI port on video card:

Input on TV was HDMI #4

The Windows 7 system only has an HDMI port on the M/B. There is no HDMI on the video card. The hookup is an HDMI cable to the HDMI1 input on the TV. No DVI, S-video, coaxial or any other manner there might be. My Windows 10 system does have an HDMI port on the video card as well as a DVI and on the M/B but even then I was attempting this hookup only using the HDMI cable. Might there be a crazy possibility of a new video card with an HDMI port make this work???? Why is the system not seeing additional devices on "DETECT"???? Would flashing the BIOS help?? Not looking to flashing BIOS as it has been suggested that is not something you should do unless it is really necessary!! THANX for your continued interest and suggestions.

I've been doing what you want to do, since the XP days.

You need three things to make it work.

    1. Good HDMI cable
    2. You need to "tell" the computer that you're using the TV as a 2nd monitor.
    3. You need to tell the TV which HDMI port on the TV, you are using (if more than one).

It would help us, help you if we new what computer hardware you have.
Probably the easiest way would be to post a Speccy screenshot.
Download Speccy | Find your computer specs, free!

Post a screenshot of the main page of Speccy. It will look like this...

In MY case, I use the TV as a 2nd monitor, like this...

    1. Plug HDMI cable into video card, and into TV.
    2. Tell the computer I want to use the TV as 2nd monitor... like this...

    3. Using the TV remote, select HDMI as the "input". Make sure the TV is turned ON, ofc.

Then... all I have to do is display what ever I want, TV or movie, etc. on my Dell monitor, then "drag" the window that is showing the image, to the TV screen. In my case I use VLC Media Player. But it can be "any" window, like maybe a browser window.

Ofc, I see this as two screens. One with my Window's desktop, and the TV with an episode of the "Frasier" TV series.
The Dell monitor and the LG TV are actually about 6 foot apart.

    THIS IS FOR WINDOWS 7

ok i've had trouble with this also probably 6 months ago with my windows 7 toshiba machine, see comp spec in profile.

this is how i did it....

go to control paneldisplay ▶ left side of window menu, change dispaly settings

plugged in hdmi cable from laptop to tv then just a case of selecting pc (or hdmi #) input through the tv remote via input list. hdmi port on tv is irrelevant, pick one plug it in job done.

it then took a couple of restarts before i got it working properly but i beat the machine.

does your computer have a hdmi port on the side like a usb port ?

from your explaining the hdmi port for graphics is internal ?

Not having success in viewing computer monitor on TV

Am going to attempt to post screenshots as suggested:Not having success in viewing computer monitor on TV-oper.-sys.pngNot having success in viewing computer monitor on TV-summary.pngNot having success in viewing computer monitor on TV-cpu.pngNot having success in viewing computer monitor on TV-mobo.pngNot having success in viewing computer monitor on TV-graphics.png. I have others from the 'SPECCY' application but am limited to 5 at a time per forum rules. Am considering borrowing the video card from my Win10 system and trying that in the Win7 as it has a DVI and an HDMI port and run the HDMI cable from that to the television. (Perhaps the HDMI port in the M/B is no good??) Or, buy a DVI to HDMI cable which would be a hell of a lot cheaper than having to buy a new graphics card for the Win7 computer. I am not seeing any success in the system detecting any additional screens other than the computer monitor. I also have the television source selector set to the proper HDMI input port & still "NO SIGNAL". Which I will not get as the computer is providing no input to the HDMI cable. The Win7 graphics card has on an S-Video and a DVI port. I am still hoping for success but my wife tires of my spending too much time with this issue. But, after 64 years I don't listen to her anymore. THANX to you all in forum land helping out!!!

An HDMI to HDMI cable is better because it includes both video and audio.

Technically the video for DVI and HDMI are the same. A DVI to HDMI cable only changes how the wires are so connected. However, DVI has no audio. If you connect the video this way you have to have a separate audio cable running from the computer to the TV. Many LCD TVs have an audio input connector. You would have determine what type of cable you needed if you used that.

    yes exactly, HDMI ▶ HDMI.

my DVR is plugged into HDMI 1 (ARC), audio return channel.
my PC is plugged into HDMI 2, NOT ARC no issues with sound .
i do not use an optical cable, separate cable for audio for anything.

Not having success in viewing computer monitor on TV

Finally, some good news for a change. Last post I spoke of switching the video card from my Win10 to the Win7 as the Win7 did not have an HDMI port. That did the trick and now I am getting video to the television in the family room. BUT, I am not totally our of the woods yet as there does not seem to be any audio?!!! Believe the HDMI card should handle that? I can try to run a separate audio cable out to the television if that could be the easy way out. I must remember that this is a Win7 system and may not be long for this world. The swap of the video cards was not a total victory as the Win7 card is not totally welcome in the Win10 environment. I can get a new card w/HDMI from Amazon for less than $50.00 for Win7 and put the Win10 card back where it belongs not spending a lot for the old girl I put together perhaps over 15 years ago. Anyone out there have other ideas and/or suggestions regarding the audio??? THANX!!!!

Are you hearing any audio? Is the audio coming out of the computer speakers instead of the TV?

When you put the video card in the Windows 7 computer did you install the driver for it?

I have a couple desktop computers with Windows 7 but it would be a lot of work to move either of them to my living room so I could hook them to my LED TV. The best I can do is do it with with a Windows 10 computer.

I just hooked up my Windows 10 laptop to my TV with an HDMI cable. I tested the audio by playing a YouTube video. As expected the audio came out of the TV's speakers. To test what your audio output is...

Locate the little speaker at the bottom right of the display

Note it has selected the Samsung TV via HDMI for audio output instead of the built-in speakers

If you right-click on the little speaker you bring up the Sounds dialog

Not having success in viewing computer monitor on TV-hdmi3.jpg

    Click on the Playback tab
Again you see the Samsung TV via HDMI for audio output.
