    Confused by different document folders

    Hi,
What is the difference between the document folder with a beige folder icon and the one with a page with a large 'A' and lines? Which one should I use to save my documents? Thanks, Candice

    Candice,

If you ever want to post diagrams of any kind then you can refer to any of this set of guidance articles. Just select the appropriate tool for any particular job.
    - There's no need to put anything into a pdf, just post the .jpg / .png created by the screenshot/snip.

    Candice,

It's really only possible to comment on a folder icon when the folder itself can be seen in its place in the File explorer Navigation pane [the left-hand pane].
    - Please post a screenshot showing the folders you want to ask about.
    - There's no need to put anything into a pdf, just post the .jpg / .png created by the screenshot.

Irrespective of icons, your own files can be saved wherever you want & have access to but the normal place would be, by default, in
    C:\Users\%UserName%\Documents
[you can paste that straight into File explorer's address bar to go straight there].

MS try to confuse us all by also showing things in File explorer that look like folders, such as the Documents folder, but are actually redirection points / junctions [glorified shortcuts] that take us to C:\Users\%UserName%\Documents
    - I suspect that the blank looking icon you asked about is such a redirection point and will be able to confirm/reject this when I see that screenshot.
    - Similarly, I think the icon with A & the lines is your Documents folder itself.

    All the best,
    Denis

The summary of Try3 post is that you are seeing the difference between a link to a folder (such as the Documents library) and the real physical folder on the drive. These are the various user libraries which are just links to folders, not the real folder themselves:

These are the real folders on the SSD:

Note that the icon displayed for both the library links to the folders and the real folders themselves will change based upon the content type selected under the Customize menu of the folder/library properties.
