How to Take a Screen Snip (Screenshot) with Snip & Sketch in Windows 10

Starting with Windows 10 build 17661, a new Screen Snip feature has been added to Windows 10 to be able to quickly snip and share a screenshot.

You can snip a rectangle, something a bit more freeform, or full screen and it will go straight to your clipboard. If that’s all you need, you can take it from there. Want more, though? Immediately after taking a snip you’ll now get a notification that will take you and your snip to the Screen Sketch app where you can annotate and share away.

Starting with Windows 10 build 18219, Screen Sketch app has been updated to version 10.1807.2286.0 and renamed to Snip & Sketch.

Starting with Windows 10 build 18282, a new window snip option is available to use with Screen Snip.

Starting with Windows 10 build 18950, you can now zoom in on your screenshots if they’re a bit too small for you to annotate on (and yes, CTRL+Plus, CTRL+Minus and Ctrl+Mouse wheel are supported!). It’ll also zoom out to make sure the whole snip fits in the Snip & Sketch window. If you want to see the snip at its original size, click the Zoom button and then “Actual Size”.

This tutorial will show you how to quickly snip a Screen Snip (screenshot) and share or save with the Snip & Sketch app in Windows 10.

A screen snip is saved to the clipboard by default.

    EXAMPLE: Screen Snip

    Here's How:

1 Perform one of the following actions below to launch screen snipping: (see screenshots below)

    A) Press the Win + Shift + S keys.

    B) Press the Print Screen key if Use the Print Screen key to launch screen snipping is turned on.

    C) Click on the pen tail button if you have Screen Snipping selected for the click once pen shortcut.

    D) Click/tap on the Screen snip quick action button in Action Center (Win+A).

    E) Open All Apps in the Start menu, right click or press and hold on the Snip & Sketch app, and click/tap on Take a new snip, New snip in 3 seconds, or New snip in 10 seconds for what you want.

This option is only available starting with Windows 10 build 18219.

The New snip in xxx seconds option is a good option to use when you need to take a screenshot of a drop menu or anything else that closes if you click on anything.

    F) If the Snip & Sketch app icon is on the taskbar, right click or press and hold on Snip & Sketch, and click/tap on Take a new snip, New snip in 3 seconds, or New snip in 10 seconds for what you want.

This option is only available starting with Windows 10 build 18219.

3 Take a snip using the selected tool above. For example, drag the pointer around what you want to take a screenshot of. (see screenshot below)

4 You will now get a notification letting you know Snip saved to clipboard where you can paste the snip where you want. (see screenshot below)

You will only see a notification if notifications are turned on, and notifications for the Snip & Sketch app are turned on.

Starting with Windows 10 build 18277, some Insiders may notice a change to select Edit or Smart Insights.

    Hi Shawn

    Is this a typo?
    4. You will not get a notification letting you know Snip saved to clipboard where you can paste the snip where you want. (see screenshot below)
I wondered if it should say "You will now get a notification..."?

Yep, it should be "now" instead. Thank you. Now corrected. :)

    E) Open All Apps in the Start menu, right click or press and hold on the Snip & Sketch app, and click/tap on Take a new snip, New snip in 3 seconds, or New snip in 10 seconds for what you want.

This option is only available starting with Windows 10 Insider Skip Ahead build 18219.

    F) If the Snip & Sketch app icon is on the taskbar, right click or press and hold on Snip & Sketch, and click/tap on Take a new snip, New snip in 3 seconds, or New snip in 10 seconds for what you want.

That's odd. Both those options already work for me in 17763.55. Perhaps it depend on the version of Snip & Sketch? Mine was updated by the Store to 10.1807.2286.0.

    Hello Bree,

Build 18219 was when this feature was introduced, but Microsoft may have went ahead released it to that version of "Snip & Sketch".

I use Snip and Sketch all the time and I'm suddenly getting odd behaviour with the file path when I come to save a Snip.

Until a couple of days ago I could save a snip in any user folder I wished, and that file path was remembered until I changed it to somewhere else. Now I can't seem to get it to save anywhere other than 'Documents'. Yes I can manually change the path (as I've done all along) but the path isn't remembered and it defaults back to documents the next time.

Anyone else experiencing this ? Currently running: Snip & Sketch 10.1811.3471.0

I've tried selecting the desired folder from all possible places on the save screen and non are now remembered.Take a Screen Snip with Snip and Sketch in Windows 10-3f1d7d7f-9404-45a3-b086-87f89e07bedd-.png

    Edit...

This issue started a couple of days ago... and I have found this:

I can confirm that the previous version of Snip and Sketch does not exhibit this 'new' behaviour. Last location that image is saved to is remembered until you change it to somewhere else. The latest version defaults to Documents every time.

That's not the previous version, that's so old it counts as beta. As I recall that was the version that was included in the install media for the public release of 1809 on Oct. 2nd. It didn't even include the delay settings, mine was almost immediately updated by the store to version 10.1807.2286.0 which did have the 3 or 10 second delay. And you have now apparently jumped forwards many generations to an Insider-only version (which probably goes some way to explaining why it has bugs). My current public release as updated by the Store is 10.1809.2964.0 and that one remembers where I last saved.

    A bit of background...

The above version seems to be what comes bundled with the latest MCT build from which I clean installed two days ago. Wanting to avoid ending up with a broken Weather Tile (which incidentally is even more broken than reported on TenForums when clean installing... but that's another story) I immediately turned off App updates in the store.

As a result of my actions I was able to prove that the Snip and Sketch update in my earlier post here was the cause of this change of behaviour when saving 'snips'.

Nothing insider related has ever been on this PC, only public release build and their updates.

I might try updating the app and see what happens.

I found how to update individual apps and this is what I now have. It doesn't now remember the last saved location
