    taskbar buttons not working

The taskbar buttons on my Dell E5530 win10 pro, build 2404???? laptop suddenly stopped responding to either the mouse pad or usb mouse commands. Everything was fine yesterday when I used it. If I click (left or right, doesn't matter) on any one of the icons or in the system tray, nothing happens. Any desktop icon opens up just fine. Right click the desktop, it works. It is just the buttons on the taskbar including the windows icon on the far left, search, etc. I've rebooted and removed the battery and held down the power on button. I did not add any programs for quite a while, just whatever windows updates on its own. If I could get to system restore I'd try that but I do not know how to get to it without going into search.Thanks.

Hi, you can boot to advanced startup options including system restore by SHIFT + left click any Restart option.

The tutorial section is a great resource:
Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10

Note: you will most likely only have restore points if specifically enabled SR after upgrading to build 2004 (with which a good many problems exist for some people).

It's possible Win key + S may open search, and Win key + R open the run dialogue.

    If the latter works, type
    rstrui.exe (return) to start SR.

Google can help you with such things too.

The forum has a number of threads- some older- on taskbar not responding which you can research.

Find a camera or smartphone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.

    Please clarify:
    a) the computer can or cannot boot into each normal boot and safe mode
    b) the touch pad and mouse do or do not malfunction in normal boot and safe mode
    c) the keypad does or does not malfunction in normal boot and safe mode

    Using the keypad:
    1) type: win + x
    2) type: a
    3) type: alt + y

When administrative command prompt or administrative powershell opens:

    type: net user test /add
    type: sfc /scannow
    type: dism / online /cleanup-image /restorehealth
    type: sfc /scannow
    type: shutdown /r

After the computer reboots sign on with the new user named test.

Indicate whether the task bar does or does not work with the new user.
