Tidy Up My Desktop - Suggestions Please

In all the years I have had a pc I find myself saving things on my desktop to access quickly.
Eg Word Docs just created, latest eBook downloaded, web pages etc I simply must remember etc
If I put them in a folder I can never remember where they are Comes with age lol

Can you suggest a one click option? Thought about adding a folder to the taskbar, but not done that before

No there is no one click option to get you organized. Start by clicking on the yellow File Explorer icon on the Taskbar In the File hierarchy on the left. Go to C;|Users\{UserName] Open Desktop. Now minimize and resize this window so it only takes up half the screen. You will see all the icons that are on your desktop are in this folder.
Now, Right click the File Explorer icon in the taskbar and open up the Documents folder. this will opens the Documents folder in a new Windows, drag it over to the other side of the screen so you can see both the Desktop and Documents folders open side by side. Now, in the Documents folder, create a folder for your Word Documents, name it what you will. Open this folder up, it will be blank. Now highlight all of the Word Documents on your desktop folder and drag them into the blank window or Cut and Paste them. You also can create different folders for the different subjects of the documents. Drag your PDF's and other documents in here as well. As you do they will disappear from your actual Desktop but will be in this folder, so they are not gone. Now open the Pictures folder, do the same. create a folder and drag pictures in there. Then Downloads, Music etc
When you want to look for something, if you remember the name you gave the folder, open your File Explorer, and browse to the Documents or whatever and to the folder that you named and your files will be there

Thank you that's a great idea. Will try that later. But Documents, Music etc are fairly tidy.
I basically don't want to add all bits and bobs I save on my desktop to those folders.

As it is all kinds of files which I only want to save for a short while until I don't need them any more.

Desktop is ideal as I can see them all but delete when I am ready
    Sorry to be awkward

Why not move everything from your Desktop folder to your User Name folder?

That way you can move anything you do want to keep hold of into your Documents/Music/Pictures/Videos sub-folders, and anything left in the User Name folder you know is for deleting eventually?

Hi, what you could do is create some folders wherever you want them and create shortcuts to those folders on your desktop.

Then, when you have a file you wish to save, simply drag that to one of those shortcuts, and it wil be saved in the folder.

That way you have fewer individual things on your desktop, just categories.

If you want to make your shortcuts look tidy on your desktop, use a program called 'Fences'.

Further, you only have shortcuts on your desktop, not large files.

You need to categorise. Imagine a filing cabinet.

Create basic categories. Then put things into them.

Or- you could buy an absolutely ginormous monitor - or even three- and have them crammed with shortcuts...!

Note: you can also use search to find things- Windows search or Fast search utilities that find as you type.
