Is This MS Operation Normal? Termination of Validity - $200 One Year?
This computer I'm having so much trouble with.
I just noticed that faintly in fine white letters on the black background it was saying to activate Windows.
Very hard for me to see anything on this fashionable black background/fine white font thing nowadays on this ancient monitor I've got.
So I figured maybe the attempts as rescuing the OS with rescue disks etc. had somehow caused it to lose it's activation I set about doing it - activating.
And found I couldn't. It wanted the product key. I've no idea what that is now after all this time. And if MS couldn't find it in the machine then no use me looking.
Anyway, finished up with a phone call to MS and a terrible line and a call back from them and a long talk with a guy who was supposedly fixing everything. Via a sort of remote control thing, like team viewer.
And the end of that was he asked me to choose which renewal period I wanted 2 years, 5 years or life, and 2 years was going to cost me $US200 - coming up $AU400 or something.
I was/am astounded.
He assures me that's the way it goes. Says if I go into a shop and try to buy Win10 I'll have to pay that money for a licence for that period of time.
But I seem to have had my licences for Win10 for longer than that. And I didn't pay that kind of money for them - I upgraded for free or something from win7 as I remember.
Is this it then or have I been scammed by some sophisticated operation?
They left me this notepad document:
