Thanks for posting your fix edino, I would have been stumped without it.
Oddly, the last thing I did before my keyboard became borked was install HP System Event Utility. Uninstalling it didn't fix the problem so I ended up here.
As far as I know this laptop has never had VMWare Workstation on it.
The value I found was:
Syn TP
ETD
kbdclass
Deleting the first two lines then reboot fixed the problem.
I then reinstalled HP System Event Utility to see what would happen but everything worked fine the second time.
