Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

Dell XPS 15 9520. Windows 11 Pro. I know this is a Windows 10 forum but this forum seem to have lot more responses to the other forum so I figure this issue is similar on both windows 10 and 11.

What is the usb malfunction I have when I get that message on bottom right corner?

I then heard a sound and got a message on the bottom right corner that a usb drive has malfunctioned? I see that message almost everytime now after I shut it down and start laptop each time? I have laptop charger connected to thunderbolt4 port. I have usb-c to displayport connected to the second thunderbolt 4 port as normal. The usb-c port, I have the Dell 20A 2 in 1 Adapter as I usually do which connects the hdmi to dvi cable for the 24' asus monitor which is having these issues... and the usb port I connect that sabrent 4 port usb hub to it to give me more usb ports. I only have wireless mouse usb and wired keyboard connected to it.

It's under Universal Serial Bus Controllers and shows as

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)

    Shows in detail

    General Tab

Device Type: Universal Serial Bus controllers

    Manufacturer: Standard USB Host Controller

    Location: Port_#0001.Hub_#0002

    Device Status

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)

A request for the USB device descriptor failed.

    Driver Tab

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Reported Failed)

And all those things with microsoft and dates

    Details Tab

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Reported Failed)

    Property

    Device Description

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Reported Failed)

    Events Tab

Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Reported Failed)

    Time Stamp Device Description

    Time Now Device configured (usb.inf)
    Time Now Device not started

    Information

    Device USB/VID_0000&PID_0002/5&2cb48be1&0&1 was configured.

    Driver Name: usb.inf
    Class Guid: (36xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx)
    Driver Date: 2006
    Driver Version: 10.0.xxxxxxxx
    Driver Provider: Microsoft
    Driver Section: BADDEVICE.Dev.NT
    Driver Rank: 0xFF0000
    Matching device id: USB/DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
    Device Updated: false
    Parent Device: USB/ROOT_HUB30/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My wireless mouse works and the wired keyboard works as I have those plugged into the sabrent 4 port hub. So it is possible the other 2 usb ports on the port hub is bad or 1 of it is bad which is what this means?

    Hello @Newmann,

It will really help us to help you if you fill in your System specifications.

System Specifications - To go in your Profile:

Please update your system specifications [ System AND Hardware ] by editing your profile. It will allow us to give you more specific advice and help.

    > How to Fill in your System Specs at Ten Forums.

To make this process easier for you, there is an Automated method that you can use by clicking the Download button at the top of the Tutorial. It contains a standalone .exe file delivered in a .zip file. You just need to Unzip the file and Run SystemInfo.exe. Please note that this file does NOT save ANYTHING to your computer.

You might also find this Tutorial useful => Collecting System Specifications in Windows

Also, to save YOU time writing information, it is sometimes better to post screenshots . . .

As a start to your problem, have you got a System Restore Point Prior to this happening that you could try ?

Also, for information and to help diagnose your USB [ both present and past attachments ] device problem, this Portable software is VERY good > USBDeview - NirSoft

    I hope this helps.

I noticed that the last time there was a message in this thread was about half a year ago, and you, Newmann, didn't reply until half a year later (today; April 2023). Were you able to fix the problem in November 2022? Then today, after a Windows update, the error came back?

I found this online that maybe could help if you still have the problem:

So this most likely means that the Windows Update enabled/disabled some setting which is making this.
Figure out exactly what USB driver that error message is referring to, and reinstall it in Device Manager...
