One of my laptops has a problem SSD which is showing less than half the capacity which its reference number indicates that it should be. Following advice I have deleted the volume, so now it doesn't exist in File Explorer.
Should I create a new simple volume to bring it back to life and be able to see and use it?
It doesn't exist in File Explorer......
As of now, where does it exist?
In the BIOS? In Windows Disk Management?
You say its a problem SSD? Are there any problems with it other than the apparent capacity?
Post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management showing all drives that it recognizes. If it is seen there, you should be able to create a new volume and give it a drive letter.
Hello, ignatzatsonic - I wonder if this thread is familiar to you? I had a "nervous breakdown" in the end, and have been struggling on with the glacial laptop ever since (it's only used for screen-capturing live webcams) - and only just got around to taking your advice and deleting the partition.
I felt I couldn't revive that thread, it's so torturous, so thought I'd ask a simple question here, but here you are with questions and I can't resist reminding you of that nightmare... 😕

It was claimed to be a "never opened" ex-display laptop, I eventually discovered that the OS had been installed on the 5400rpm HDD instead of the SSD.
These are the drives reported in Device Mgr:
But the 256GB Kingston SSD was only showing less than half that capacity - and it still is - I have just (since reading your reply) created the volume and formatted:
I had imagined that half the drive must have been corrupted or blocked off in some way, but now I wonder if it's simply mis-labelled, maybe it always was a mere 120GB SSD? How could such a thing happen?!
But I should still be able to copy over (with Macrium, as per your original advice) the OS from the slow HDD (there's only 45GB on it), I still have the USB stick prepared for the purpose.
(BTW - In that old thread TenForums guru SIW2 suggested using DISM++ to see if Optane drivers were installed on the OS drive but not on the SSD, which would possibly explain why Macrium was unable to complete the copy - it had reported "not enough space". I haven't used DISM++ yet, I thought I'd do the volume deletion first, but I noticed today that Intel Optane is listed in Add/Remove progs.)
One problem with the original thread was that people assumed I must be doing something wrong but I am certain that was not the case.
Anyway, I am now back where I started, D-drive is usable for storage as before, so I'll resume normal recording and have another go with Macrium after a sleep or two... and if that still doesn't work, maybe investigate doing a new install of Windows on the SSD.

I know little about laptops and nothing about Optane.
You could have counterfeit/fraud issues, mislabeling, or simply something I know nothing about.

The SSD installed is a 128 GB SSD, not 256 GB. If you run "system information" in Windows 10, you can click around in the results and see exactly what hardware you have inatalled.
Right-click on the Start button--> Windows PowerShell
Run the following command to see what disks you have.
Get-PhysicalDisk

Device Mgr says it's a 256GB Kingston - is there any software that will read the SSD that is actually installed rather than report the drive that's supposed to be installed? I can't face dismantling to physically check the drive.

Yes, CrystalDiskInfo reads the data direct from the drive's hardware.

I case you can't read that, the Kingston SSD number seems to end in 128GJ1, which explains a lot.
Could anyone tell me if the CanPool column is relevant?
