Maybe a little history, for us.

Is this a new laptop and is this the first time you have tried to access these files using this laptop?

If you double click on a folder, does folder disappear, like it was opening, but then the right hand window says no files or folders, appears empty?

fwiw, some folders are greyed out.

yes, this laptop is brand new. I've had it for a month or so.

The WD HD is about a year old or so. I had a PREVIOUS laptop that had a virus on it. I restored that laptop, but my sinking feeling is that the virus could be affecting the documents I have on my external HD.

    This sux.

I wonder if this is just an ownership issue. I would have expected you to get an error message stating you do not have permissions.

When you say greyed out I assume you mean just the folder. That would indicate the folder is being displayed but it is a hidden folder.

Have you set file explore up to show Hidden files ? You also said you changed some permissions, or was that attributes?

    Back to ownership.

Add Take Ownership to Context Menu in Windows 10

If you get files back it would be important to keep an offline copy to prevent virus / malware attacks.

    Hi all,
Just thought I'd post back that I "solved" it. On a hunch, I removed the external HD and installed it on an older win10 machine. It worked on that machine. So, then I installled it on my laptop...voila! It works now. I...have...no...idea...

Thanks @Caledon Ken for the patience and help!
