    1) Uninstall Avast antivirus using the applicable uninstall tool:

    Avast Removal Tool | Download Avast Clear | Avast


    2) Make sure that the HD Tune test demonstrating bad blocks is posted into this thread


    3) After uninstalling Avast antivirus post a new Tuneup plus share link into the newest post


    4) If there are still problems after running the Avast uninstall tool then

    a) Install a fresh version of Avast then uninstall again > report findings

    b) Run Revo uninstaller (free version) > report findings

    Uninstall Software, Remove programs easily - Revo Uninstaller Pro



    5) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:

    chkdsk /b /v

    Test all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /b /v C: or chkdsk /b /v D: or chkdsk /b /v E: etc.

    These are the deepest chkdsk commands and may take significant time.
    Run the commands on the Window drive overnight while sleeping.

    C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /b /v
    The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

    Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
    process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
    checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: Y

    Reboot as needed.



    6) After completing all chkdsk scans run:

    Yep, that's what I've been getting. tried it again last night and got that message again.

    windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For offline
    repairs, details are included in the log file provided by the /OFFLOGFILE flag.

    Yes, I used the Avast uninstall tool a few days ago and it didn't improve anything. I just reinstalled Avast as directed and uninstalled it and all assorted items using Revo as directed. (this is a pretty cool program, by the way. Thanks for the info).

    Running a HD Tune scan now. I don't think it will recognize any bad sectors on the current drive. The one that had bad sectors I've actually removed from the system. I will post the results if it comes up with anything.

    I also just finally updated my BIOS firmware to 1205 as directed. hopefully now I get Minidumps

    I will run the chkdsk /b /v later

    It was F:, an internal drive that was mostly backup but also held the dropbox folder

    OK, I also downloaded the Windows MCT and put the install media on a USB drive in case needed.

    FYI, pleased to report that still no BSOD over the past two days (since "clean" uninstall of Avast and update of BIOS)
