Can't Update Win 10: Kmode Exception Not Handled

    I can't seem to update Windows 10 64-bit home from version 1903 (May 2019)

    HP ENVY Phoenix Desktop - 860-121, 16GB RAM, GTX 970, 500GB SSD

As it goes through the update process, it stops about 27% complete and I get a BSOD with the KMOD exception not handled error. There is NO error number or other information specific to the error.

I have tried updating the drivers as best as I can. I know the BIOS is up to date (or at least the latest that HP offers).

I have also tried using the Windows 10 Installation Media tool to try and refresh Windows while keeping my Files and Apps, but again, I got a BSOD with the KMOD Exception not handled error (again, without any error number or additional diagnostic info).

If anyone is wondering, the method I used is outlined in this video:

How to Refresh Windows 10 Without Losing Apps or Data - YouTube

Any other thoughts before I have to wipe the disk and reinstall Windows completely?

(And to be honest, if I have to wipe and reinstall the OS, I will probably just replace it with Linux Debian, or Mint or Manjaro.)

Thank you, I will try it out tomorrow. It is my son's computer and he is gaming right now

Quick question before I run it: is the defalut location where it will write the log file on the desktop?

I ask because for some strange reason I can't seem to save files to the desktop. I think there was some permission error.

It let me save files to the Documents folder, but not the desktop. This was using word pad.

I was logged in to the administrator account.

Some antivirus software may interfere with V2.
Make sure extract all is clicked before running the script.

If Bitdefender is in use then run the applicable uninstall tool.

V2 will create a new file on the desktop.

LOGS should complete with a file explorer window displaying new folders and files.

    The logs displayed:
    a) drive problems
    b) BSOD

There were no dump files created or collected.

    Please perform the following steps:

    1) Run:

Tuneup.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

    2) Post LOGS results share link

    3) Run HD Tune (free version) (all drives)
    HD Tune website
Post images into the thread for results on these tabs:
    a) Health

    4) Run Sea Tools for Windows
    long generic test
Post an image of the test result into the thread

    5) Open administrative command prompt and type or copy and paste:
    chkdsk /b /v
This may take hours to run so plan to run overnight.
Run on all drives using the syntax: chkdsk /b /v C: or chkdsk /b /v D: changing the drive letter to the applicable drive.

    C:\Windows\system32>chkdsk /b /v
The type of the file system is NTFS.
    Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

    Type: Y
    reboot

    6) Use the information in this link to find the chkdsk report in the event viewer.
Copy and paste into notepad > save to desktop > post into the thread using a one drive, drop box, or google drive share link:
Read Chkdsk Log in Event Viewer in Windows 10 Windows 10 Performance Maintenance Tutorials

    7) These steps / tests can be performed overnight:
    a) Run HD Tune Full error scan
    b) Sea Tools for Windows long generic test
    c) Chkdsk /b /v

    8) Make a new restore point:

Thanks for all the help. I will work on them overnight.

How do i know which drive has the bad blocks? Will I only find that out by running chkdsk?

(Both of the drives are relatively new, like less than a year old).

One other strange thing: When I am logged in as administrator, and I go to This PC, it says there is a THIRD drive which is 98MB in size. However, this computer doesn't have a third drive. Only the SSD and one spinning HD. It says it is a USB drive (I will try to get more details later). I can't "open" this drive and there doesn't seem to be a way to share it. I have checked all the USB ports and nothing is plugged in.

And when I log out of the administrator account and log in using my son's account (no password), then that third drive does NOT show up at all.

OK, I ran tuneup.bat (the first one), and this is what was returned in the command prompt:

All drives need to be tested with each:
    Sea Tools
    HD Tune
    Chkdsk

The event viewer entries for drives are often symbolic.

    Reboot the computer, then run:

DiskParInfo.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

Uninstall Avast using the applicable uninstall tool:
Avast Uninstall Utility | Download aswClear for Avast Removal

Make sure Microsoft defender is on.
