    BSOD on install from USB

Have an HP Notebook 14-cf0013dx, 8gb ram, 1TB HDD 5200rpm (full specs are in profile)

Attempting to reinstall windows after BSOD on start, mostly page fault in non paged area BSOD error but can also be irql not less or equal, or Kernel Secure check failure. Saw another one or two but cannot recall at the moment.

Symptoms. Can boot to USB in UEFI or legacy and Load the windows 10 install made from the windows creation tool. The loading files completes. The system restarts and the HP splash screen appears with the windows 10 dots circling underneath for about 2 revolutions then a BSOD.

    First steps:
Tried windows 10 recovery. over 48 hours still not completed.
Ran HP hardware diagnostics, Memory HDD, system board all passed.
Ran memtest86 from Hirens Boot CD. passed.
    Ran seagate HDD test. passed.
Tried windows 10 USB install after each step above.
Tried Windows 10 safe mode installation, was able to get through installation but on reboot the same results, BSOD within 3 revolutions of startup dot-circle.

    Second steps:
Removed HDD, hooked up to main computer and did a CMD, DISKPART, CLEAN
Updated BIOS to most recent version F.53 to support windows 10 v.1909
Moved DIMM from slot 1 to slot 2
Tried HP cloud recovery with exact same results as listed above.
Tried Windows 10 USB safemode install again same results. Was able to complete installation from USB but BSOD on restart.

Short of replacing the Motherboard due to the integrated graphics memory (which still tested good in HP system board test), I am at a loss. Please help with any suggestions.

    Hi tfair,

Welcome to the Ten Forums BSOD forum.

Some steps / tests that were performed may be repeated.

Find a camera or smartphone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.

Find 3 or 4 flash drives that you can format (> or = 8 GB).

Create tools that can be used to test the hardware, and troubleshoot:

    On a working computer create:

    a) a new bootable windows 10 iso 1909:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10
    Download Windows 10 ISO File
    Download Windows 10 ISO File
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10
Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

    b) bootable Ubuntu flash drive:

    c) Kyhi boot rescue flash drive:
    Toolkit Item: Kyhi’s Rescue Disk – Win10.Guru
    Toolkit Item: Kyhi’s Rescue Disk – Win10.Guru

    d) Memtest86 version 8.03 flash drive:
MemTest86 - Official Site of the x86 Memory Testing Tool

    e) Choose one of the bootable flash drives and download and install HP UEFI hardware diagnostics version 7.6:

Thank you, Zbook, for the reply.

I have most of the USB drives you listed but will take the time today to make the Kyhi and a fresh Ubuntu (the USB I have of Ubuntu is a little older), take pictures on my cell phone (sorry the laptop is not booting so, no screen shots) and post a few so I can to show the process I have described.

    Thank you.

OK. I have the drives you requested ready to go.

The Windows 10 does the same as before with a 64bit install it loads the files, restarts and then bluescreens with the attached messages. Tried twice for different messages. [screen picture attached]Attachment 278417Attachment 278418

The ububtu will not boot even in safe video mode, [screen picture attached]Attachment 278419

Kyhi will not even show as a bootable drive I made two different USB drives and both will not show in boot devices.

Memtest 86 shows no errors Attachment 278439

Here is the BIOS showing the updated firmware (serial and other info cut off, will post privately if needed)Attachment 278440

at this point I will ask what would you like for the next steps?

Run Memtest86 version 8.4 (or newer version if available) for four passes.
Repeat the test so that eight passes are performed.

MemTest86 - Official Site of the x86 Memory Testing Tool

Use a camera or smart phone camera to take pictures and post images into the thread.
In case there are any problems uploading images use share links (one drive, drop box, or google drive)

Memtest86 has a feature to produce a text report.
Please post this in addition to the images.

Thank you for your reply. I have completed the first full 4 pass test with memtest86 and am posting the error free results. I will complete another test as requested, but please know that this will be the 3rd time a complete 4 pass test will have been done and two separate HP system tests (more on that below).Attachment 278569Attachment 278570Attachment 278571

Just as a note for thought. I was able to make a working Kyhi USB by replacing the BOOT.wim in the \sources folder of a working win10 USB. Tested on another computer and booted to desktop. Used same USB on the effected computer and got the exact same result as a win10 boot USB. loads files, shows HP logo with win 10 dot circle and BSOD.

While the HP diagnostics shows a pass for the processor and system board I have to wonder. The crash appears to happen on higher function. Is there a way to test the processor from a USB other than the HP diagnostics USB, an extensive system test shows all hardware passing.

Please indicate what happens currently with each of these boots:
    a) safe mode
    b) normal boot
    c) kyhi boot rescue
    d) bootable windows 10 iso
    e) ubuntu

    a) safe mode - no OS actually installed. (See above steps taken.)

    b) normal boot - HP splash screen then windows dot-circles appear underneath HP logo for about 3 revolutions then a BSOD that varies in code.

    c) kyhi boot rescue - original would not show as a bootable USB, but when merged onto a bootable windows 10 ISO crashes (see above description and screen shoots)

    d) bootable windows 10 iso - Boots to loading files bar, completes loading files then restarts with HP splash screen then windows dot-circles appear underneath logo for about 3 revolutions then a BSOD that varies in code. HOWEVER,
In safe mode install from USB, can get to install screens and through setup loads all files but on restart BSOD as if starting normally

    e) ubuntu : loads HP splash screen then freezes on Ubuntu circles. Attachment 278602Attachment 278605

When I try to load Ubuntu with safe video mode it crashes with the above posted screen.

The kernel error on sync when booting to ubuntu and the fact that memtest86 shows only 2 of the 4 cores activated makes me consider the processor core 3 or 4 as maybe the issue. Asking for guidance here not sure where to go on this one.

Usually to boot into safe mode requires the installation of a Winows operating setting and then opening Windows Recovery Environment (RE).
When you did it did you have these three options:?
    safe mode
    safe mode with networking
    safe mode with command prompt

Which flash drive can you reliably boot from?

On this flash drive use a working computer and download and install HP UEFI hardware diagnostics version 7.6:
    https://www8.hp.com/us/en/campaigns/.../pc-diags.html

On the problematic computer insert the flash drive with the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics.
Power on the computer and repetitively click F2.
Run the HP UEFI hardware diagnostics: system > extensive > loop until error > run at least 2 loops > take pictures and post images into the thread

Please know that I am willing to re-run tests but redoing the same test I have already posted as passed, just running it more times, is not a solution. I have already run the HP SET twice with no errors. Running till failure for two passes is pretty much the same thing and another 8 hours till I can post the same results. I am hoping to find another avenue to pursue rather than doing the same thing over and over hoping for different results.

There are 3 broad categories that cause BSOD:
    a) misbehaving drivers
    b) malfunctioning hardware
    c) misbehaving firmware (BIOS)

With Ubuntu problems > probably malfunctioning hardware
Hardware tests > so far no significant malfunctions detected

Sometimes hardware tests report pass when there is malfunctioning hardware.
So repeat the HP testing overnight.

    Please comment on:

Perform a "vanilla" clean install with Windows 1607
    a) disconnect Ethernet
    b) disconnect wifi and if available use a hardware off
    c) if possible disconnect any router
    d) install Windows (do not accept any updates)
    e) indicate whether there is or is not a BSOD with the "vanilla clean install"

Windows Download - #1 Windows ISO Download Source
Microsoft Windows and Office ISO Download Tool
    TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)

Boot to the BIOS repetitively clicking F10.
Check to see if there are options to update the BIOS and / or reset to factory defaults.
    Post images into the thread.
