Windows 10 Home - can't update the OS

    Hello,

I'm wanting to upgrade from Win10 Home to Pro, so I went to the start area and entered Update, then clicked "Check for updates". The screen that popped up had a few icons in the upper right-hand corner, one being Windows Update. Below those words I see Attention needed. When I click this icon, NOTHING happens.

I remembered several months ago I was constantly getting nagged to upgrade to Win11. At that time, I had made several recommended registry changes to avoid a forced upgrade, so I went back and deleted all of those registry changes, rebooted, but still have the same issue.

Next, I went to Settings, then searched for "troubleshoot settings". This displayed the Troubleshoot window.

Near the bottom of that page I clicked "Additional troubleshooters". The next window (titled Additional troubleshooter) had a section named Get up and running. Under that section, I click Windows update, then "Run the troubleshooter".

The first time I did this, it said it fixed a problem. I decided to see if things changed on the Windows update window. No change there (i.e. it still showed "Action needed" on the update window), so I rebooted. Still not able to click.

Any ideas what else I can look at to fix this problem? I want to make sure my Win10 Home OS is update-to-date before I upgrade to Win10 Pro.

That is not how you upgrade from Home to Pro. See this tutorial.

I should have been clearer. I'm not using that icon to upgrade to Pro. I want to get that icon "active" so I can get all the available updates applied to my Home version before I upgrade to Pro. I "fear" that if I don't fix that now I will have the same issue when I upgrade to Pro and not receive updates when running Pro.

    Thanks,

To upgrade from Home to Pro, you're gonna need to purchase a Pro product key, then change your product key here:

I just saw the post above. Follow that tutorial to upgrade.
Upgrade first, then see if that fixes that issue. There are different updates for Pro than the Home updates.

If it was my computer, I would get a brand new ISO file from Microsoft using their Media Creation Tool, then I would do a repair install from it:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Upgrading to Pro will not solve your current problem, which you already understand.

Because you have made changes to the Registry,it would be advisable to confirm normal operations by running ---dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth ---followed by ---sfc scannow ---and run ---sfc ---until a clean report is given.
Then shutdown and restart and check ---Settings>Update & Security >Windows Update as to the status of the Updates, whether any available or not.
Fiddling around with the Registry can often have unintended consequences.

Good point about fiddling in the registry, especially when it comes to blocking Microsoft "spying" and "forced updates". The modified registry settings are designed specifically to break the update system! Now the user is likely experiencing the exact effects those registry modifications were designed to create.

Thank you NavyLCDR,it will be interesting to see if the situation changes.
If the "experts " stuff it up,as the conflicting Updates often show, then we ordinary users do not have much hope.

By the looks of the images in the tutorial, an upgrade looks like the installation may reset Registry values to their default settings. So if I were you, I'd do the upgrade and see if that fixes things. If it doesn't, then I'd look for ways to fix the Registry. Why stress about that right now if there's a chance that the upgrade could fix the issue?

Two ways to go about this:
    1) Figure out how to fix the Registry, then do the upgrade.
    2) Do the upgrade, with a chance that the upgrade fixes the issue. If not, then figure out how to fix the Registry afterwards.

The second method gives you the possibility that the issue could get fixed. While in the first method, you require yourself to find the fix.
The upgrade looks like it's a "repair install" anyways...

I did end up going for broke and upgraded to Win10 Pro (I thought that was a good suggestion). I have to say the upgrade is, by far, the easiest upgrade I've ever done. It was literally 5 minutes and one reboot. However, the problem persists. I ran sfc /scannow and it did find some errors (and fixed them:

I ran it a second time and it ran clean. Rebooted, but the problem persists.

Any other ideas? I did confirm I'm running Win10 Pro btw.
