<Failed to Read Description. Error Code 5>

hi all

ok I did a dumb thing and permanently disabled updates on my system because every time I tried to update it failed, trying to update to 21h1 but whenever I do all I get on restart is a screen like my matrix avatar, I did this using one of these scenarios but cant remember which option I used.

Enable or Disable Windows Update Automatic Updates in Windows 10

system

<Failed to Read Description. Error Code 5>-sys.png

after doing the stupid thing i did and messing around with update it cant do it anymore , just comes up with error code 80080005 or similar

and in services it says this

<Failed to Read Description. Error Code 5>-wu.png

<Failed to Read Description. Error Code 5>

i just updated my smaller win10 computer and it updated fine but i dont use that computer, this is my main computer.

once i get update working again i'll cross the bridge about KB's so i can install the latest OS build.

hope this makes sense and any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could have used a script to disable the service as I have done.

I have disabled "Windows Update Medic Service" intentionally, while "Windows Update" still works.

thx Matthew i tried that but didnt't fix the issue.

pretty much at my wits end here, nuked the computer did a full factory reset/recovery then ran updates, took nearly 24 hours to do reset and download updates but still wont update to 20h2 and came back with error, screenshot below shows new updates and status. i have read a lot about ISO's but have no idea or clue about that scenario.

almost to the stage of just running the system as is and stick the updates where they fit so if anyone can help, i'm begging, it would be much appreciated.

EDIT: from what ive read here just recently it doesnt really sound advisable to do that update anyways.

Version 20H2 is going to reach the end of support. If you want a new version, consider downloading the latest version:
👉 Download Windows 10 ISO File

Then...
👉 Create Bootable USB Flash Drive to Install Windows 10

Then...
👉 Clean Install Windows 10

ok if i've got this right i do them 3 steps in the order you listed, i have no idea what i'm doing in regard to ISO's, boot media (i'll research) but after the first 2 steps i have to do another clean install.

Do you have an external device such as a DVD provided by the manufacturer for a full factory reset/recovery? If not, you should firstly create a system image.

Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect

My fellow members will be happy to help you with Macrium Reflect, the most popular imaging tool on Ten Forums.

Do you mean the following?

How to factory reset on Windows 10 | Tom's Guide

It is not disk imaging. I suggest using Macrium Reflect to create a system image.

yes thats how i did it....

i use the full factory reset (NOT the keep my files option) to return to it to off the shelf state.

your link to the Macrium Reflect looks like the goods and i will have to try that when i feel confident enough, i'm sure someone will help when i want to do the ISO thing but i'm still confused when it comes to drivers etc for this machine and which ISO to use, i dont want windows 11 at this stage,

what size media (usb stick) do i need to make this bootable media ??
i also have a couple external drives here so does have to be dedicated for boot media or can i use a external drive with other files on it ??

i still have a windows 7 machine that wont be updated any further, i use the Simplix pack for that one.

Directly download an ISO file from Microsoft via this site: TechBench by WZT (v4.1.1)
The latest version is Windows 10, Version 21H2 (build 19044.1288)
File size: 5611.13 MB

8 GB.

If you have a 16-GB/32-GB USB stick, you may create a Ventoy device, onto which you may copy multiple bootable ISO files. When your PC boots from the Ventoy device, you will see a list, from which you may select an ISO file to be used. Should you have any questions, please don't hesitate to post them in the following thread:

Ventoy iso bootloader EASY installs from usb for any iso os file

You may put ISO files as well as personal files onto the Ventoy device. Your personal files will not affect the functions of the device.
