Windows Update just refuses to update my system

Windows Update has been failing on the update, Windows 10 version 20H2 despite all my efforts. It fails with Error 0x80070057 and says it will try again only for it to inevitably fail again. It has been like that for months, probably longer.

Here is what I’ve tried

• Renaming SoftwareDistribution folder to SoftwareDistribution .old. Didn’t help.
• Running sfc /scannow. It finds some corrupt files but is unable to fix them.
• DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestoreHealth. It also fails with Error 0x800f0950 and the message “DISM failed. No operation was performed.”
• SFCFix which fails with the message “Something has gone horribly wrong and SFCFix has crashed.”
• Windows Update Troubleshooter. It found some things and said it made some fixes but it didn’t stop the Windows Update from failing the next time I ran it.
• chkdsk but it found nothing wrong on my C drive.
• MemTest86 but it too found nothing wrong with my memory.
• ResetWindowsUpdateTool. Don’t quite remember this one from a few days back but it didn’t help.
• Edit. Also tried Windows Repair Fix with a Windows ISO. It ended with abruptly with a simple and unhelpful message like 'Windows Installation failed.'

Computer also had problems with crashing ever since I built it about four years ago but I figured it was because I curelessly bought some incompatible hardware and at that time, I didn't want to spend any more time working on it as long as it worked which it mostly did apart from the occasional crashes. It usually crashes the first time I boot it up in the morning but is fine booting up the second or third time of the day, so I just learned to live with it but now I realize it may be something to do with Windows Update which made the computer boot up in the early hours of the morning to update until I put an end to it by cutting off its power every night before I go to sleep.

I’m at a loss on what to do. I’d rather not do a clean reinstall now. So any solution to prevent that would be helpful.

I KNOW it is not a BSOD question but the logs will very likely reveal the problem
