    Error 0x80070003 Windows Update KB5010342

Hi, Prior to posting this help plea, I did the following after I tried to update windows from the Windows Update screen by hitting Restart Now - button, and got the error code. I went onto my search engine and put in the error code and loads of advice, I did the following - 1. Checked my date and time settings - all good. 2. Used the Command Prompt to - net stop wuauserv - ren c:\windows\SoftwareDistribution softwaredistribution.old - net start wuauserv - still got the error - 3. Ran System File Checker - sfc /scannow - yes this did find errors and corrected them, re ran the Windows Update - 2022-02 Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 21H1 for x64-based Systems (KB5010342), after a reboot.
Still came back with the error code. 4. Window Troubleshooter, Nothing found that was wrong.
Found another site that suggested the CMD as Administrator to run - net stop bits, net stop wuauserv, net stop cryptSvc, net stop msiserver then to run ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old, ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old.
was unable to get the softwareDistribution to alter as my system told me it was in use in another folder. also the Catroot2 folder I could not change for the same reason.
I tired searching on how to find them in the Services lists and stop them running then go to the files location and physically change them .
Then i did the following - net start bits, net start wuauserv, net start cryptSvc, net start msiserver
I rebooted my pc downloaded the updates again and after installation another reboot, and got the same error
it loads as far as 7% stalls then reboots saying unable to update rolling back.
I even have tried downloading the file KB5010342 separately from the Windows Update Catalogue, saved it to my hard drive and then tried installing it, the screen told me it had installed and now to reboot,
But hey presto 7% then rollback unable to install.

I think I have done all I can, so now need help from you guys......This is driving me nuts, I usually can work out what's wrong and solve it, but not this time.

    Thanks in Advance

    Run:

Tuneup_plus_log.bat Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

List any of these installed or recently uninstalled non-Microsoft software:
    a) antivirus (include malwarebytes)
    b) firewall
    c) drive encryption

Uninstall any of the above software using the applicable uninstall tool.

Download and install on the desktop:
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

Detach any hardware other than mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

Place the computer into clean boot:
Perform a Clean Boot in Windows 10 to Troubleshoot Software Conflicts

Perform an in place upgrade repair while in clean boot:
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

During the in place upgrade repair:
    a) manually disconnect Ethernet
    b) turn off wireless (hardware off if available)
    c) in the menu select to not install updates during the in place upgrade

If the in place upgrade works then you're set.

If the in place upgrade fails then run

    a) setupdiag:
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/win...rade/setupdiag

    b) the V2 log collector:
    BSOD - Posting Instructions

The TenForumsTutorials version of that procedure is the best I have seen [they all differ]

I had same problem and solved with this way: I found ESD folder in C:\ drive that contains a Windows folder in it. So executed C:\ESD\Windows\setup.exe and setup downloaded updates then I upgraded windows with this setup (i was not lose any data including junctions to another drive, if you don't change default selected don't touch my files option your files would be safe). I hope this solution fixes your problem too.

pdfx, You or your computer maker created that folder. It is not standard. What you have described is known as a Repair install and also as an In-place upgrade.

Steve, I think that resetting Windows update directly addresses the problem you have described so it is more logical to try that first. If the problem persisted, I would suggest a Repair install but you might well not need to go that far.

    All the best,
    Denis
