    W10 Home 20H2 update KB4592438 Fails to Complete after 96% -0x800f0922

Windows 10 Home version 20H2 OS build 19042.630
    HP Pavilion 15-cw1012na
    8GB RAM
    230GB free space
    Kaspersky AV
    No VPN running
No obvious issues with internet connection during updates

Security Update for Windows KB4592438 has been failing to complete installation configuration for the last 10 days, despite retrying after doing all the suggested remedial actions I could find in my online searches. Error code 0x800f0922.

The download and installation itself completes in Windows Update, but during the configuration phase after the PC restart I get the message "We couldn't complete the updates. Undoing changes. Don't turn off your computer" This is after configuration has reached 96%.

    Remedial actions have included:
    Windows Update Troubleshooter
    DISM and System File Checker
Resetting Windows Update components and clearing Windows/Software distribution/Downloads folder
Installing the update manually from the software catalog (failed as already noted above with 0x800f0922)

(One possible error cause suggested was that I needed to have .net 3.5 active so I tried to activate it but failed dismally. Hopefully this isn't the root cause!!)

These actions have been tried repeatedly after each failure, in different orders and I'm getting a bit desperate 😂

Any suggestions for a solution would be gratefully received.

    Thank you.

Using a third-party antivirus app (i.e. Kaspersky) instead of using Windows 10's built-in antivirus app (Windows Security aka Windows Defender) can cause updates to fail to install.

Get rid of Kaspersky and then try again.

    Hello

    Error Code 0x800f0922 means CBS_E_INSTALLERS_FAILED.
Can you upload the Windows Update logs from the following path?
    C:\Windows\logs\CBS

Copy and paste the CBS folder on your desktop, zip it and then upload it on WeTransfer and share the link here please.

    Friendly greetings

I notice you didn't mention doing an In-Place Upgrade.
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

For older ISO image versions, go here instead...
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Hi, one person who encountered this error number on a swathe of machines found he had to set the App Readiness service to automatic.

    Worth a look.

Thanks for the kind words and the log files.

Please push the Windows Button, type CMD and select the Option "Run as administrator".
Copy and paste the following command in the command prompt and excute it please:
    wmic service get name,displayname,pathname,startmode,exitcode > "%USERPROFILE%\desktop\services.txt"

This creates the services.txt file on your desktop.
Please upload it on wetransfer too and share the link.

    Thanks!
