I still cannot get the 1909 to 2004 update

Well, after three times or more I still cannot get the 1909 to 2004 update my wife's Dell laptop so she will just stick with what works. By the time M$ figures out how her PC will have to be pitched out and she gets a MAC. Yeah, I have tried almost every stupid suggestion here.

I don't know which suggestions you've tried... but I had the same problem and this worked for me...
Repair Install Windows 10 with an In-place Upgrade

Here is the short version of the In-place upgrade tutorial...

    DISABLE non-Microsoft:
    a) antivirus software
    b) firewall software
    c) drive encryption software

Make a full OS backup with a program like Macrium Reflect (free)
Macrium Software | Macrium Reflect Free

Go here and get the Media Creation Tool and save it to your desktop.
    https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/soft...load/windows10

RUN the Media Creation Tool and use it to: Create an ISO image... save IT to your desktop.
This will be the latest version of the ISO image.

For older ISO image versions, go here instead...
    Download Windows 10 ISO File

Right click the ISO image and choose: MOUNT
Open File Explorer and you will see a new drive letter. It will look like a DVD optical drive.
Double click the new drive letter to open it.
Find setup.exe and double click it to start the in-place upgrade.

Choose the Keep personal files and apps option.

After it's all done... to UNmount the ISO image, right click the new drive letter and choose: EJECT.

The ONLY thing you will lose is some of your personalizations. Your programs and data will be intact.

Thanks Ghot, I will try to convince my wife to follow your advice, but she is adamant about not doing any more updates. When v2004 first came out I had trouble getting it to work with my Dell Inspiron 15 3000-3552 that is only 6 months younger than hers. I think I refreshed Windows or maybe used the Media Creation Tool method; it's been too long ago to remember. I really get tied of reading endless posts about cures that just do not work; I am not new to this stuff, after 60 years computing it is just boring. Anyway, thanks again so I will see if she will let me do it. She's the boss sometimes.

Depends on what you consider old system. Her PC is 3 years old. An old system is like a mainframe GP-4 I took off an F4E simulator out in Tucson, AZ back in 1970 that had worked from 1965. Last time I saw it was in 2002 working a DC-9 simulator. A computer working 24/7 for 37 years is an old system.

    @dustymars

    I understand.
One thing I can tell you is... at least in my experience, 20H2 caused me no issues, so far.
I had trouble with upgrading to 2004. That was what got me started with the In-Place Upgrade, in the 1st place.

Instead of troubleshooting you can perform:
    a) Windows refresh
    b) reset save files
    c) reset remove files
    d) custom install
    e) clean install

    Refresh Windows 10
    Reset Windows 10
    Custom Install Windows 10
    Clean Install Windows 10

If you decide to troubleshoot then please perform the following steps:

    Run:

Tuneup.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

DiskParInfo.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

LOGS.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

    V2 and DM: (3) BSOD - Posting Instructions - Windows 10 Forums (tenforums.com)

Upgrade_failure_info.bat - Click here to go to the BSOD batch repository to download and run this batch file.

It took forever for my desktop to finally be offered the 2004 update. Had to clean install to get 20H2. My 2017 Lenovo ThinkPad Yoga X1 STILL hasn't been offered the 2004 update so I'm still at 1909. Will probably have to clean install 20H2 on it.

I used this process to upgrade several 1909 VMs that told me they weren’t ready for the upgrade. No issues and then no issues then getting to 20H2.

I usually document all my installations for others to use as a reference (see Sam's Common Scents posts 997 and 993 for 2004->20H2 and 1809->1909 respectively). Previous installations also exist in older posts. However, I just wanted to inform you that I have an old Dimension Inspiration 1440 I also use and installed to for my wife and had no problems other than what is mentioned in the posts above. Since 1809 I have used the upgrade method successfully. It does take forever on the old Dell as indicated in post 997 vs. my new Lenovo, like 3.5 hours difference! You haven't stated what specifically went wrong with your installations, so little help can be offered other than make sure current system is updated fully. Just as further info, I use Windows Defender which did NOT cause any problems. I am still on Office 2003 which presented NO problem on the Old Dell, but my new Lenovo came preinstalled and OFFICE 2003 would no longer install. The only thing that did not work was preserving the Old Microsoft Games where the solution is also in my posts. If you are still having problems, I'd advise going to 20H2 or to provide more detail about specific problems. Since I went through the cycle of installations on my Old Dell, I might be able to provide some help.

I'm getting a bit old and my memory is a but dim, so I forget exactly what happened to my Dell update from1909 to 2004, then 20H2; but, I installed the ISO routine and it took a long time. Several years ago I took to skipping the normal update method for the one posted by Ghot in #2. I attempted that with my wife's Dell and it just stalled out after 5 or 6 hours. Most likely some driver or file corruption that takes too much time for me to find. It is just too much trouble and she is happy with her PC, so that is the name of that story. Someday when she is not looking I will sneak in and fix it.
