We are working on updates 15% complete

    Hi

I had to do a clean install of W10 using the W10 upgrade on my
ASUS Desktop PC CM6630_CM6730_CM6830, I cannot work out how to change my profile

I all went very well and I installed a number of my programs
including Office 2007, both office an W10 were activated without a problem.

Then I ran Windows update and one of the updates for Office 2007 failed with a
retry option which gave the same result, "install failed" retry.

After a few restarts and retries it was still failing and there was no way to "Check for updates"
so I downloaded the KB file the install failed with a message that the relevant program
    was not there.

I hid the update so I could run check for updates which ran sucessfully and found
about 25 updates which started to download.

When the first update was ready it installed then demanded a restart.

When I once the reboot started blue screen came up with the message
"We are working on updates 15% complete" "Don't turn off your computer"

This started 8 hours ago and has not changed, it still says 15%.

On thing I noticed is that the Internet Active light is flashing showing data is flowing
but in 8 hours it would have downloaded over 7,000 GB so something is wrong.

Any ideas on that I need to do or can do about it.

I have attached a picture of the screen

    regards

Hi, unfortunately despite the new forum prompt to enter your build number you haven't done so.

I'll assume then your clean install was with an old build of Win 10, and that you are receiving a feature update (a build upgrade).

There are some lengthy threads on tenforums about the time this sometimes takes, and this question recurs from time to time.

Patience is strongly recommended as sometimes this can take a few hours for a few people.

but in 8 hours it would have downloaded over 7,000 GB so something is wrong.
In some cases, depending on your original build (unstated) you might be receiving
    a. the new build
    b. a major update
    c. others

Therefore you might be getting, say, 4Gb + more, and how long that takes depends on the usual factors.

Then there's a lot of processing to be done.

How long does the 1903 upgrade take using Windows Update?
How long to install 1903 update--new laptop
Windows 10 feature update very slow or stuck

Should it end up completely stuck, you do have the (risky) option of powering it down. If you're lucky it will undo changes on restart.

You can then try downloading the iso, manually upgrading using that only without accepting other updates (you can disconnect the internet) and if that works, then apply further updates.

I hope you have a current disk image so you can recover to your previous state should things go badly wrong. tenforums members tirelessly recommend the routine use of disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid).

    Hi

I created a new install disk four days ago using an ISO file from Media Creation Tool.

I did not know I was going to need this help so I did not take note of the build number.

Failing any more advice I will wait until morning, another 8 hours and shut don the PC, restart and see what happens.

    Cheers

Hi, as you are using the latest build, it seems very odd there should be so many updates, unless they are not Windows related (office and others?)

At least it would be easily redoable as it's a clean install and you won't lose data.

Please boot your computer with Windows Installation Media and from Windows Recovery Environment start the Command Prompt.

Please execute below command and reboot your computer to see issue resolves.

    Code:
    mkdir C:\scratch

    DISM /Image:C:\ /Cleanup-Image /RevertPendingActions /ScratchDir:C:\Scratch

Please replace all of the partition letter C: with Windows installed partition letter. When computer boots into Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE) environment the drive letter assign to Windows partition may not be C: drive letter because Windows 7, 8 , 8.1 and 10 creates a separate system partition when it's installed from scratch. The system partition contains boot files WinRE assigns the system partition the C: drive letter and the Windows installed partition will be assign any other drive letter usually D: drive letter is assign to Windows installed partition. The Bcdedit /enum | find "osdevice" command can be use to find out the drive letter of the Windows installed partition the output of the Bcdedit command is similar to this osdevice partition=D:. The drive letter after partition= is the drive letter of the Windows partition.

    Hi it's all fixed,

after the PC running all night without any changes to the "We are working on updates 15% complete"
message I used the power button to close and restart the PC, during the boot cycle a rolling back updates
came up then after about ten minutes the PC restarted and booted to the desktop.

I ran Check for updates again and four were found including an update to build 1909.

I installed all but on restart I got the we are working on update message again but this time it was stalled on 10%.

I let it run for one hour then closed and restated again, I got the same failed updates message then when the PC restarted
I ran check for updates and this time the only update found was the update to 1909, which installed and restarted okay.

I checked for updates again but I am now fully updated.

Thanks for all the advise, I always learn a lot from you guys and gals.

    Regards

    Daniel

    Glad it worked out ok.

Remember it's a great idea to use disk imaging routinely as a backstop. As you will have appreciated, interrupted a partial update whilst in progess would leave your system in an undefined state, which can happen if your dog pulls the power lead out...and no battery. (Well, just an example- but power outages happen).
