You hide it with the troubleshooter. Microsoft tech support told me to do this. Also told me to delete everything in temp, %temp%, superfetch and panther folders. Although I don't believe clearing those folders is necessary I guess its good maintenance.

It makes sense though. its an old November update. For some reason after installing the latest January update, a subsequent update check tries to install the November update again, which is a much older version number. Which is probably why it errors.

I believe this has happened to me before with a previous update I can't remember which one. Starting to become a trend, maybe because we are on the latest build. I'm on build 17131. Not sure if its supposed to say 1809? Some people still on older builds. Sometimes these things will also try to install again if it has been cleared from update history. In my case I had no option to uninstall this update since it was not listed as installed.

Also should note in the past, If Microsoft supersedes an update, they will still give it a newer number. Also should note the latest cumulative updates will include all previous updates.

I had same issue as you. It also was not listed in apps and features.

MS tech support advised me to hide the update. You have to use the troubleshooter. I do not think you are vulnerable as long as you have the latest update installed. (KB4480976)

They released KB4480977 yesterday. But it hasn't hit my machine yet not sure if it is for my build. MS Update catalog shows it for windows 10 LTSB? I'm not sure what that is. I have windows 10 home. 10.0.17131

Also, why are you stating a much older version number. You are stating the same version number again. That can't be right?

Also interesting to note, They no longer have a separate ssecurity update. I only see one for Adobe in January. I guess starting this year they are just including all windows updates in one single update?

with the release of 2019-01, I just 'fixed' the problem by going to Update Settings, finding that there was the 2018-11 pending install, clicking 'install', seeing it fail again (because duh), then clicking Retry, which checked for updates, and found 2019-01 (and a Defender definition update) and then downloaded/installed those updates. Restart required, but hey.

So, presumably that's that for this situation. Just an alternative idea (if it's possible on your device) to either waiting for UpdateOrchestrator to make a daily check or deleting the program from Add/Remove and waiting.

I've never gotten the non-Patchday cumulative updates for 1803, and the update check on the retry didn't spring KB4480976 or 1809 on me.

Man, it boggles the mind how an update that failed in every way (wrong update wrong channel) managed to slip through the tightly woven net that is Microsoft’s vast, diverse, and highly skilled QA department.

It will also update automatically even if you do nothing. Note: You do not have to uninstall the prior update as described in Post #1. If you already did, the new update will still install fine.

I received this updated version and it also appears under Apps, so am assuming for now all is good. By the way, in response to the suggestion to switch to Semi-Annual Channel, I did that months ago. I do not need these so-called feature updates and certainly not if they are going to cause so many issues.

Appreciate the work you are putting in to help other users with these problems.
