Since the update on my two HP computers (desktop and laptop), Windows Media Player 12 crashes whenever I try to open it.
    Error code is 0xc0000005
    Problem is with CompPkgSup.DLL
Can this be fixed without uninstalling the update (which took forever to download and install)?

Yes, WMP (Films & TV, and anything else that uses directshow) will crash for certain types of video files ( .ts for me, .mp4 for others). CompPkgSup.DLL is not the culprit apparently, just the messenger. One commercial company hit by this for their HDHomerun product has a workaround...
...unregister, change the merit, or remove the broken filter...

    ...but there's a caveat:
Thanks for the post but unregistering and registering filters can break future releases of the HDHomerun or break other programs ... best to just uninstall the upgrade....
I have now uninstalled the update and hidden it from reinstalling.

WMP crashing totally, not just for video

When I open WMP 12 now, even if I'm not playing a song (and I very rarely use it for video - almost always for music), it stops working and closes.

I'm not sure what "...unregister, change the merit, or remove the broken filter..." means, but when you say you've uninstalled the update, do you mean the entire cumulative update?

Is there any way to let Microsoft know that their latest update is causing these problems?

It means some serious Registry permissions changes and editing. I wouldn't go there...

Yes. Just the CU, the others aren't a problem.
Settings > Update & security > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates.

Apparently SiliconDust's engineers have already contacted Microsoft. Their support forum also says...

not sure how much effective this is to get fixes from microsoft, but it can't hurt
...and of course Windows 10's telemetry would have automatically reported each crash to Microsoft any way. They must have gathered quite a lot of statistics by now :)

WMP 12 seems fine on mine- just tried an mp4 file.

Nope, just tried mine again and it stopped working and closed before I could even play a song.

I don't know if Microsoft even WANTS to fix this - assuming somebody there, instead of just the "community," really does know about it.

You can use the Feedback hub app, or MS's technet - and I think comment above indicated MS is aware. Meanwhile use other players (or see the end of #122) and wait a bit, occasionally searching to see if it's been fixed. Beyond that, there must be some difference between yours and mine that triggers the problem.

Yes, VLC worked fine for me when all around it crashed. VLC uses its own codecs, not the Windows ones.

Both VLC and WMP are working fine for me.

WMP is working fine here. I hadn't used it for a while but reading about other users problems in this thread thought I'd better give it a go :)
