    UPDATE 7/14: KB4565503 Cumulative Update Windows 10 v2004 build 19041.388 - July 14

    June 18, 2020 - KB4567523 (OS Build 19041.331)

Applies to: Windows 10 version 2004 all editions, Windows Server version 2004

IMPORTANT We have been evaluating the public health situation, and we understand this is impacting our customers. In response to these challenges, we are prioritizing our focus on security updates. Starting in May 2020, we are pausing all optional non-security releases (C and D updates) for all the supported versions of Windows client and server products (Windows 10, version 2004 down to Windows Server 2008 SP2).
There is no change to the monthly security updates (B release – Update Tuesday); these will continue as planned to ensure business continuity and to keep our customers protected and productive.

For more information about the various types of Windows updates, such as critical, security, driver, service packs, and so on, please see the following article.
Note Follow @WindowsUpdate to find out when new content is published to the release information dashboard.

    Highlights

    • Updates an issue that might prevent certain printers from printing, generate print errors, or cause apps and print spoolers to close unexpectedly.

    Improvements and fixes

This non-security update includes quality improvements. Key changes include:

    • Addresses an issue that might prevent certain printers from printing. The print spooler might generate an error or close unexpectedly when attempting to print, and no output will come from the affected printer. You might also encounter issues with the apps you are attempting to print from, such as receiving an error, or the app might close unexpectedly. This issue might also affect software-based printers, such as when printing to PDF.

If you installed earlier updates, only the new fixes contained in this package will be downloaded and installed on your device.

    Windows Update Improvements
Microsoft has released an update directly to the Windows Update client to improve reliability. Any device running Windows 10 configured to receive updates automatically from Windows Update, including Enterprise and Pro editions, will be offered the latest Windows 10 feature update based on device compatibility and Windows Update for Business deferral policy. This doesn't apply to long-term servicing editions.

    Known issues in this update

    Symptom Workaround
Some apps utilize the ImeMode property to control the Input Method Editor (IME) mode for individual text entry fields to increase typing efficiency. Some IMEs in Windows 10, version 2004 (the May 2020 Update) might have issues using the ImeMode property with certain apps. For example, the input mode will not switch automatically to Kanji or Hiragana. For more information and workaround steps, please see KB4564002.

We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.
[ADDED 6/23] The Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS) file (lsass.exe) might fail on some devices with the error message, “A critical system process, C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000008. The machine must now be restarted." Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

    How to get this update

    Before installing this update

Microsoft strongly recommends you install the latest servicing stack update (SSU) for your operating system before installing the latest cumulative update (LCU). SSUs improve the reliability of the update process to mitigate potential issues while installing the LCU. For general information about SSUs, see Servicing stack updates and Servicing Stack Updates (SSU): Frequently Asked Questions.

If you are using Windows Update, the latest SSU (KB4560366) will be offered to you automatically. To get the standalone package for the latest SSU, search for it in the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Windows Update and Microsoft Update No See the other options below.
Microsoft Update Catalog Yes To get the standalone package for this update, go to the Microsoft Update Catalog website.
Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) No You can import this update into WSUS manually. See the Microsoft Update Catalog for instructions.

    File information

For a list of the files that are provided in this update, download the file information for cumulative update 4567523.

Note Some files erroneously have “Not applicable” in the “File version” column of the CSV file. This might lead to false positives or false negatives when using some third-party scan detection tools to validate the build.

That........ was a fast one. Althoughhhhhh...... it would not appear in my WU to be installed. So what I did, downloaded the update from the catalogue and installed it that way. :)

    Installed quick 'n painless.

I just installed it on one of my test machines (a Lenovo X380 Yoga, and it shows builds 19041.331 in Winver. Didn't have any problems proceeding, and doesn't seem to affect performance noticeably. Wonder why MS is limiting distribution to the Catalog only. Interesting!

Because it is a fix for the specific printer spool problem that only affect a few users with particular printers. They can download it, the rest of us don't need it.

Much like the patch a couple of months ago to fix people losing vpn access --- it was a big enough problem that warrants an emergency off schedule patch release.

But WITHOUT sufficient beta testing, Microsoft doesn't want the general population to obtain the patch automatically. The general public will eventually get the patch on patch Tuesday next month.
