This thread must really have run its course by now --those that want W7 can keep running it as a Virtual machine until the end of the universe if they want.

Nothing beats running an OS on real hardware, and I will be keeping W7 on at least one machine. Partly to see how it goes, and partly because that machine has a single core processor that runs W10 like you're swimming in treacle.,..those that want W7 can keep running it as a Virtual machine until the end of the universe if they want.

Not entirely true -- with modern Hypervisors and passthru you can run on pretty well native hardware at bare metal speed -- and provided you don't mind a little bit of paravirtualisation - particularly in the area of Disk I/O you can really achieve BETTER than bare metal speeds or to be so slight that you'd have to have a really accurate measuring device to test the difference with.
Gone are the days of VM's being clunky slow performers -- pretty well at enterprise level servers and cloud systems are invariably all Virtualised.
On domestic machines you of course will incur overhead when NOT using a full HYPERVISOR - VBOX and VMWARE wks / player have the overhead of the Host OS as a starter plus it's emulating a load of the VM hardware --makes it simpler for Home users of course but at the cost of some performance.
Things like QEMU.KVM, XEN (Citrix --ugh horrible system though) and Esxi have got efficient virtualisation down to a fine art. HYPER-V on W10 has a problem because of the sheer size of the HOST OS running -- it's better on Windows servers though.
Any realistic (IMO) sensible Virtualisation where you want to get to anything near Bare metal speeds needs a Linux Host (including a tiny one like Esxi).
VMWare wks / player etc are absolutely fine for zillions of uses and users and on decent hardware will perform adequately but thy can't get anything near bare metal performance due to the way they have been designed.

There will always be people who have problems accepting modern day technology....living in the past...familiarity perhaps or even a comfort blanket.
An alternative example being motorists here in UK wearing goggles and helmets, chugging along on country lanes at 15 mph holding up traffic, often broken down with steam pouring from an overheated (outdated) engine.

I don't have a problem with modern technology, but only when it is warranted. I don't believe Windows 10 is a step up, that is why I use Windows 7 and 8.1 machines. There is some software that only runs in those platforms and not Windows 10. Why should I deprive myself of those, just so I could move side ways to Windows 10.
OMG I am still using the same body I was born with, it's far aged than any version of Windows, should I upgrade??

W10 From a security angle is certainly a step up....W7 no longer supported....you could always install in VM.
The word "Deprive" suggests comfort blanket.
As to your trite remark regarding "age"....myself being 83 would never have reached this without prostate removal and various other medical innovations, so yes you could say I have been upgraded.
