    Hi there
Afraid I'm too old to understand "Textspeak" -- any chance of actual words (especially if people are not native English speakers in the first place) or does your Internet provider charge per keyboard stroke !!!!.

    dear jimbo,
it's been a while, sorry I was unclear, I'd blame it on my quadriplegia, paralysis, that's no excuse for communicating skills though...

I just want to create a vm on hyper-v with a windows 7 image my first attempts yesterday all failed. I could not create a connection, and I'd get DOS window error: boot failure. reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device. I have 30 years of computer experience, namely software, i can not use my hands to add/remove hardware at all, i can however direct a absolute novice to physically do just about anything, including adding, removing, replacing computer parts.

couldd still use help if yall are willing

    forgive my grammar

    Hi there,

What are the VM settings you're using?

    First step:
You need to create a Generation 1 type VM otherwise it will not work for Windows 7.
If you went with Gen 2, delete VM and start all over.

It can work with 1024 MB ram but you can give it 2048 MB or more (3072 MB or 4096 MB) to improve performance.
Although the default max memory settings will take care of the memory assigned.

''Unfortunately, I don’t think your load of 7 will work on our current PCs. After the 6th generation intel processors, they dropped all support for Windows 7. 7th Gen would work with some workarounds, but since 8th and 9th Generation, they do not work at all as far as I know''
Assuming the mobo supports csm, Win7 can run on those machines. There are graphics drivers available for 7th&8th gen , but there are no reliable graphics drivers for win7 9th gen. The answer is a separate graphics card.

    ty Hopachi for your reply,
yes i did exactly as you posted, 8-10 times when i get to configure networking it has a box that says not connected/ drop down to default switch, i did both, after each failure yes i deleted the vm's..

when i get to the next step /connect virtual disk, by default create virtual disk is checked the name is ''New Virtual Machine.vhdx'' location ''C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks\'' size is 127 gb...

i select use existing virtual hard disk either vhd or vhdx, i'm using vhd, about 100gb file of win 7, browse to it on my external drive/ next/ window pops up
    Name: New Virtual Machine
    Generation: Generation 1
    Memory: 1024 MB
    Network: Not Connected

click finish, message appears inserting drive??? then the window that shows New Virtual Machine, status off, and the menu on the right...creating a VM win7, on win 10 pro i3 gen 9 machine-untitled.jpg

i'll leave it right here for now,

ps; my windows images are for dual boot win7 and xp, when i create a windows backup, it will not separate c;win7 and d; win xp,
i cannot pick just 7, the old win 7 computer needs both drives to boot, in other words there are boot folders and files on win 7 and xp, i cannot remove dual boot any typical way., msconfig only lists win 7, bootloader it's the same in advanced options....

i think if i did widows repair on both drives would do the trick, or even just win 7. easybcd will not remove the dual boot, just configure boot order etc.

i've thought 4ever the win 7 image with some boot files, and xp with the other may be a problem when i got to this point, creating a vm in hyper-v...

OK, thanks for going into the details. All looks good, but you went ahead with all defaults so it seems.
You don't need a DVD / ISO if your VHD contains a bootable backup image.

    Tip when creating VM:
The size of the disk can be altered, no need to go for 127GB unless you want to restore the backup there.
If you plan to use your own VHD disk then there is no need to create a new one: just attach a disk later.
    creating a VM win7, on win 10 pro i3 gen 9 machine-new-vm-nodisk.png

But you can continue from where you left it...
If you already have a backup restored on 2c1783b2-945d-11e5-98d2-806e6f6e6963.vhd, then you need to point this one in the VM: browse for disk to replace the "New Virtual Machine.vhdx'' with your backup VHD:

I recommend to copy the VHD from d: location to your "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks" folder, if d: is a HDD the VM will be slower but it will run either way.

If you do copy, after you copied the VHD you will have to browse to it in "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks" folder to select it and use.

    ty,
let me backup a minute, you said ''I recommend to copy the VHD from d: location to your "C:\Users\Public\Documents\Hyper-V\Virtual Hard Disks" folder, if d: is a HDD the VM will be slower but it will run either way.'' did you mean if d is an external hdd? yes d; is, i'm copying it to the users/public/* now.

the vhd is 100gb, it contains all of win7, and most everything i want to run, when bored, namely msft flight sim 2004, call of duty 4, and cod finest hour+ cod united offensive, return to castle Wolfenstein etc.

ok the vhd is where we want it, c;\users\public\etc.

how do i back up to the point where i can attach virtual disk later? start over?

    what about my connection,?

    Internal hdd, external hdd, both.
External is worse in speed so yes, you got it right.
What backup? if you copy the VHD then the copy is like a backup.

You need to know that there is no sound by default in Win7 VM under Hyper-V. I won't go into technical details how to improve this but most of the games, if not all, will fail to run in the VM.

Select it in the VM as I mentioned.
I don't understand. There's no need to backup, no select later, select now, use current VM. Otherwise you begin from scratch a new VM.

I hit connect, dos window came up, said hit start, then it went to DOS window error: boot failure. reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device

    OK,

Can you put a screenshot of the VM settings?

    For example, I got this:
