user profile service service failed the sign-in

    Hello.

I have Windows 10 on my computer with 4 accounts, none of which I can log in with.
When I try logging in to any of them, it gives an error.
''User profile service failed the sign-in''. (The safemode boot option gives this error as well.)

So far, I have used my Ubuntu bootable USB stick to see if I can still access all my account files. Yes, they are all there.
(And I can change read/write permission.)

The only thing I did prior to this issue was changing a UAC setting for one program in taskmanager and
changing the processor affinity to 0 checked , which was a game.exe. After that, this problem started occurring.

Is there anything I can do through the Ubuntu USB to restart the user profile service or somehow use the CMD?
    to fix something?

I know this is a weird combination of Windows & Ubuntu, So I hope that the forum topic is correct.
I'd rather fix this without reinstalling Windows.
I don't know my Windows version number, just that it's Windows 10 and 64-bit.

    Thanks, James

What I am thinking about is, if I can somehow try to add a New User manually in Users folder through ubuntu.
And see if it shows up on the sign in window as a 5th account so I can perhaps reset the User profile service in services.msc?

But I am not entirely sure how to make it show up.

    Welcome to tenforums.

I'll assume you haven't yet started to use 3rd party disk imaging regularly and routinely- if you had, one option would have been to restore your PC to as it was when you created the image.

Endlessly recommended here as a basic means of recovery if your PC is unbootable, affected by ransomware, or your disk fails- or you do something to 'break' Windows.

    =================
Given what you say, there's a chance that using a System Restore point (assuming you have a recent one) may help.

    To do that you need
    - a bootable Win 10 install disk
    - your password

    See:
Boot into Safe Mode on Windows 10
    Option 1
    via linked tutorial
Boot to Advanced Startup Options in Windows 10
    Option 1

Otherwise (and you would probably prefer not to try this) see:

Thanks for the reply, Yes I have been looking around.

I'm have not been using a 3rd party disk imaging.
PC finds no System Restore point.
Boot into Safe Mode does not work as mentioned in the start of first post.
I've tried ''Startup Repair'' <- It says ''cannot repair with startup repair'' and leaves-
    me with a logfile C:\WINDOWS\System32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt,
I checked the log with Ubuntu boot usb stick,
where I as said, can browse through any of my folders/programs,delete copy etc.
    but not through Windows.

I've also tried ''net user administrator /active yes'' in the CMD option to add another
account to sign in screen on C: and not X: . but doesn't show up on log in screen.

My last solution use the uninstall apps and settings but keep personal files options,
but i'm not sure if my personal files which are stored in some app/program folders will vanish.

But since i'm able to go into the C: drive with Ubuntu, I have access to NTUSER.DAT files
there must be something I can do.

    You might consider Option 5
Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account in Windows 10

and try to work from there if you can log in.

I suspect this may be a case of a lesson learnt the hard way...

    - use disk imaging routinely
    - have a restore point created on schedule (tutorial available).

Boot from a Win 10 installation drive and at the Windows Setup screen, press Shift+F10 simultaneously to open a command line prompt and type::
    diskpart
list vol (take note of letters assigned to all partitions)
    exit
chkdsk X: /f (replace X with the partitions letters found with list vol

    Thanks for the replies.
Yes I will write an update soon.

    @dalchina
I followed Option 5 carefully. - built-in admin acct is now Activated-
Computer restarts -- Now the fun: the log in screen is now empty without any users to click as if the icon images is gone.
just the time and the background is there as usual.
    :
To confirm that Administrator is activated I went into advanced options and to CMD where it gives you option to choose an account in a list, in this list there is my 4 accounts + the new Administrator (before it was only 4.)

    @Megahertz
I fixed list & followed your list and put ''chkdsk C: /f'' and Finished.

The fun issue now is the empty user log in screen, I can't log in or try Administrator lol

On list vol it says Healthy.

on Checkdisk it says Windows has scanned the file system and found no problems.
    I did
    X:\Windows\System32>chkdsk C: /F -- Is it correct?

    or do this?:

    C:\>chkdsk C: /F

No I cant write or click admin

    - sounds more like a lock screen than a login screen?
