    Lost Windows Password

My brother-in-law has forgotten his password for his Windows PC. (HP laptop). There isn't any hope he will remember it.
The "Reset Password" option asks for a thumb drive, but it expects one with some sort of saved password on it. So that's no go.

According to the HP website, this model (15-db0091nr) came with Windows 10 Home 64. Because I can't log in I can not use the instructions for verifying the Windows version.

It is many years since I was into this stuff. I'd be perfectly happy to just reinstall and start over with an empty system, but I doubt he has anything that came with it, such as the Windows install disk (if it even came with such).

Is there any hope for recovering this machine without the password?

    Thanks!

1 Download the ISO - use one of the sources identified in Download Windows 10 ISO File -TenForumsTutorials [one of them, the MS MCT tool, achieves both steps 1 & 2]
2 Create Bootable Installation USB - TenForumsTutorials
    Then Clean Install - TenForumsTutorials

There's no need to take such drastic action as a Clean install. This procedure will get you back in to create another user account or reset the password of the existing one with far less work.
Enable or Disable Elevated Administrator account [Option 5] - TenForumsTutorials
Then log in with it and use that to reset the original account's password.
And, while you're at it, create a spare, password-protected, local Admin user account as a hedge against a day when the normal user account is corrupt [it's rare but does happen].
And do write all user passwords down somewhere secure yet accessible. Writing down their passwords is as effective as & is a lot cheaper than making 'Password reset disks' [which are only for local accounts anyway]. I always write user account passwords down on a piece of paper that I keep inside one of those dog nametag cylinder things attached to my main keyring -
Here's a [UK] link for some example ID tags https://www.amazon.co.uk/Pet-Barrel-.../dp/B00DEB1JVQ There are lots of available choices but I bought ones that, like these, have a slot in the bottom for me to swing off so I can be confident they won't come apart accidentally while I'm out & about.

    Best of luck,
    Denis

    Welcome to TenForums.

It's really worth making time to browse through the Tutorial index - there's a shortcut to it at the top of every page.
    - At the foot of the Tutorial index is a shortcut to download it as a spreadsheet.
    - I download a new copy each month.
    - By downloading it as a spreadsheet I can benefit from Excel's excellent filtering capabilities when I search for topics of interest.
    - Tutorials are also listed by category at Tutorials - there's also a shortcut to that at the top of every page.
    - Both tutorial lists are searchable.
    - You can also search for TenForumsTutorials in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com/tutorials after your search term. For example,
    taskbar toolbars site:tenforums.com/tutorials

You can search TenForums using the search box in the top-right corner of all TenForums webpages or using Advanced Search - TenForums
    - You can also search TenForums threads in many general search engines, such as Google, by adding site:tenforums.com after your search term. For example,
Search for drivers by HardwareID site:tenforums.com
    - [This is what the search box in the top-right corner of TenForums webpages does automatically]

Thanks so much, Denis! The USB drive is being set up even as I type this.

I don't need any lessons on password management, but my brother-in-law, the one who forgot his, sure can! I could pass your suggestions along, but on his best days he would have trouble following them, and his best days are well behind him.

VICTORY!!! All that is left is to Disable Elevated Administrator Account.

Thanks again. It is good to know that this place exists if I ever need it again.

Run CMD as admin and copy/paste:
    Code:
    takeown /s %computername% /u %username% /f "%WINDIR%\System32\utilman.exe"
    icacls "%WINDIR%\System32\utilman.exe" /grant:r %username%:F
    copy /y %WINDIR%\System32\cmd.exe %WINDIR%\System32\utilman.exe
In the future, changing the local password will be as simple as this, at the logon screen using Accessibility button:
    Code:
    net user username password
