There is no driver showing besides the Windows Hello Face Software Device in Biometrics.

It says I have a HP Envy Notebook when I looked in System Information.

Went into Setting and on Accounts changed it from Off to On for Require Windows Hello Sign-In for Microsoft Accounts

Went to HP, put in my Serial Number found the Validity Fingerprint Sensor driver and tried to install but it failed with the error message: Failed to Extract Cab

I believe if I recall when I ran into the initial fingerprint issue a few years ago, it was because of an update to Windows and I had to install another fingerprint driver. At least that is from distant memory on what was recommended.

My HP Envy Notebook model# is 17t-n000CT0

So now what should I do?

    1. Identify your PC model number. This may be on a label on the bottom e.g. - note the string of digits.

You might be able to go to HP's site and use that green button.

Either way you should be able to get a list of drivers for your exact model, if stil available from HP.

It sounds as if you did download one from HP- maybe it's not the right one.. but failure to extract from CAB file sounds more like a failed download.

    2. The lack of driver correlates with your experience (no surprise there).

    3. It may be that there is no compatible driver- that's true of the Lenovo model before this, for example.

    4. Try a driver updater program - but ONLY for this driver- ignore all else.
    E.g. Drivermax

1 or more of these might find a driver for you.

    No driver amongst those suggestions.
The HP one that it did find did not install. It was from 2016.
I restarted the laptop checked Biometrics but there the driver was not appearing.

I'm looking on YouTube but nothing is appearing to date.

In Device Manager, Biometrics, Under Windows Hello Face Software Device in Events it says:
    Device Root\WindowsHelloFaceSoftwareDriver\0000 requires further installation.

But I still do not see Fingerprint sensor anywhere.

I've tried installing Validity with its driver by going to C:\swsetup\sp74365
but that doesn't fix the issue when I restarted the computer. So I uninstalled this.

    I keep searching for answers....

    a. Try a driver updater as I suggested.

    b. It is odd that the driver from HP did not install- unless there is a fundamental incompatibility issue.

    c. Give up, move on and accept there's no support- you're running Win 10 on a device that doesn't formally support it- so that's at your risk.

    d. Search for comparable experience on your exact model with Win 10.

    e. Ask HP.

Thank you for all of your suggestions!

I have reached out to HP Community to see if they have any suggestions too.

    Giving up....well....I might...but then again....it's not my nature! :)

Take care and thank you again.

IT'S WORKING!!! I honestly do not know what I did. But I went back into Sign-In options and the Finger Print sign in option was not grayed out. I proceeded to swipe my finger and restarted the computer. Went back into Biometrics and Synaptics FP Sensors (WBF) (PID=050) appeared.

Any ideas on how that got fixed?
    I'm speechless!!!

    Thank you....thank you. thank you!!

Thinking about what might have fixed it....I downloaded a Validity driver....but it didn't fix the issue. But yesterday I deleted it I think? and clicked scan for hardware changes....
Today Drivermax had a Validity driver appear. I downloaded and installed it and restarted the laptop but the Fingerprint sensor wasn't active.

So....I went back to Sign-In options and now the Fingerprint sign-in was not grayed out. I still am baffled on how and what really fixed this.

The Validity driver that was installed under Biometrics was now showing Synsptics as I mentioned above.

You're an expert. Any ideas on how I got this to work?

    Thank you again!!

Great- it's possible that using the driver updater has helped you download the correct driver.

Or perhaps it was an issue about enabling the feature.

Or perhaps related to when you restarted.

Or maybe just fate- if you believe in that. One can only guess...

Perhaps a little of all you said!
It started up in record time today along with the flashing fingerprint sensor.

    Thank you again Professor!!!

Again it stopped..Fingerprint sensor was flashing but wouldn't swipe

Again it stopped.....the Fingerprint sensor was flashing but it wouldn't accept my swiping.

I went back into Sign-In options and the FingerPrint option again was greyed out.

I unistalled the Synoptics appearing in Biometrics and scanned for hardware changes and rebooted. It reinstalled the Validity driver. I went back into Sign-in options and it was still grayed out.

I then went to Windows Update and cliked on drivers available and saw another Validity one. Downloaded and installed that and restarted the laptop.

Success....again...for how long? Why does it keep doing this?
