how to get the biometric scanner to work version 1903

i have the 1903 version and the fingerprint scanner and i have synaptics driver for this scanner installed. also i have the fingerprint in setting showing along with the password installed. when i go to scan my print it fails and tells me to start over.

so what migh be missing. i watched 4 or 5 youtubes for doing this on the hp pc but it is just not working. so if there better instructions for doing this or maybe someone here has some steps to do that i may have missed.

also i have another pc with the sensor spot but no sensor, is it possible to get the sensor and install it and add the drivers and get that to go also? providing the mb has a spot for the scanner to plug into? thanks

    Hi,
    1. What is the exact model of the PC or PCs in question? Your specs merely say 'win 10'.
Click 'My computers' under my post for comparison.

    2. Given that we don't know that, is your PC supported by the manufacturer for Win 10? (You can check the drivers download page for your model).

Sometimes some older PCs cannot be successfully upgraded to Win 10 or beyond a build of Win 10 and have everything working.

    3. Are there any yellow triangles shown in Device Manager? (missing drivers)

    Here are some relevant tutorials:

my pc is the hp 6470b and it came with the fingerprint scanner. at one time i had this working but i turned off for some reason a few years ago. now i have the biometric device showing and i got the hp synaptic driver installed and it says it is working. i installed the hp protect tool manager and that made me put in a password a pin and some other stuff but it will not let me do the finger print stuff. that is shows in that program. all i want is when i start my pc to have the fingerprint scanner to let me ust the pc and also if possible when it goes into the screensaver so it wakes up again using that scanner. if this is not possible then i will delete that protect program and just use the password and forget the scanner now.

also fo the life of me i can't just gett o the hello in the setup. i got there few times but it took me so long that i did not remember the steps i got there by accident i guess. so what main heading is that under? i go to control panel and i do not see settings by itself. i just as soon delete that ho protect pergam and just have window prompt me for the fingerprint when booting and turning it back on after the screen savor. thanks

You didn't answer (2) so I have done some research for you.
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers...ook-pc/5212922

This suggests the last complete set of drivers was for Win 8.1.
However the fingerprint sensor is optional, and I can't see any biometric drivers listed.

A basic question to ask is- is there evidence of the PC running Win 10?

I found this: although it's clearly an old laptop, this ebay offer includes a fingerprint sensor, and running some build of Win 10
    HP ProBook 6470b Windows 10 Laptop Intel Core i5 3rd Gen 2.6GHz 4GB 320GB HDD | eBay

However that in no way guarantees that a later build of Win 10- for which it was not designed- will run successfully.

    Again, please:

at one time i had this working
    - which O/S was it running then?

Have you worked through the tutorials I posted?

i have the latest driver from hp installed. synaptics hp sensors (WBF) pid=003d

yes it ran with win 10 on it a few years ago, i had to do some back ground changes, i did them again per youtube instructions.

i have the win10 i got from windows during that required upgrade years ago.

no ? or triangles in the devices in biometric devices and under that is a picture of the fingerprint

i got this pc from ebay like 5 years ago and it had i think win 8 installed on it. and then windows popped up one day and said i needed to get win 10 or else.

i have not seen any tutorials from you yet i typed in the search window at the top on how to setup the fingerprint scanner and i got nothing. so if you have a link to those i will go thru them.

i went thru 4 or 5 youtubes showing how to do this and not of them are working. they made me install a bunch of programs and they don't seem to to it either. i get the fingerprint to show in the manager but it will not come up to let me actually scan my finger.

in the windows setup screen when i can find the fingerprint image and i see the fingerprint setup and go to the place that says scan my finger and when i do i get an error message.

how do i get to that setup page in the control panel? i have been there a few times but by accident. i go to the control panel and i do not see anything that tells me where to find the fingerprint setup nor the hello page.

    thanks

thanks i did all that and i still got that error message. how ever now i get the fingerprint at bootup, that must be from the ho protect tool program. before when i rebooted my pc it came up to the logon and gave me a choice of pw pin bt or fp, then after i picked fp everytime i rebooted it gave me the fingerprint to do. also when it went into screen saver and i moved the mouse or anykey it made me do the fp again. not this go around. now as it boots up i get a scren that asks either the password or fp and i have to tab to the fp and scan then it continues. i guess i can use that but that one doesn't require a fp after the screen saver turns on.

i was hoping all i needed was to scan at boot up and screen saver. and be done. but with what i now have it takes a long time to boot up, my guess is the protect program is running a bunch of things before the fp kicks in.

so if i can't get the fp scanner to work at windows boot up and or the screen saver i will uninstall it and forget it and just chain the pc to the table. that is so much easier. thanks for trying to help.

Get rid of unnecessary manufacturer utilities.

You have all the info I can give you- the rest has to be your decision..

And don't forget- fingerprint doesn't really add security- anyone can take your disk out and read it unless it's encrypted.

well i messed it up this time. i ran a restore point back to 12-25-19 and it restarted and still asked me for the fingerprint. then i did that and windows opened and asked me for my password but did not take the password. then i turned it off and now i get 9 flashes on the power light. so now i may have to take out the drive and usb connect it to the wifes pc and run a format program and then restore my backup. now i'm on the chromebook. i even tried all the stuff hp had me do for passwords and nothing. so when i get it back no more fingerprint. my drive is bitdefended so according to some here that is what i needed to encrypt the drive. thanks now to do some troubleshooting.

ok so after trying to get that biometric going it locked me out of my pc. i had to do a complete restore. and guess what!! after my pc restarted the fingerprint came up and asked me to set it up. i did it and started running the pc, but it was slower that a stone. so i formatted the drive using my boot sd card and just started over. and again it came up and asked for the fingerprint. this time i passed. being some people came up and told me the finger print is not secure. so now i will try to see if encrypting the hard drive is better? and if i do that i can open folders and see my data. or if i put pictures or doc's on a thumb stick and go to another pc i can see what is on that stick. if not then i will not encrypt the drive.

so i also had the impression that norton's back up was going to keep my files but that failed. it is a good thing i copied my file in the shole status. as the windows backup did not restore my files either. go figure. i got back about 1/2 of what i had. i had a ton of hearing aid program software and hard drive utilities, plus my security camera programs and they are all gone in the win10 backup. but i have them saves as copied programs. so i will not do a windows backup ever again. this is the first time i did a restore in win10 and got nothing back. and i did that backup to a hard drive thru the usb port onto a portable hard drive.

at that time i also did a copy from my pc to that drive and the copy is what i got back. sorry program thanks

There is no comparison between fingerprint login and encrypting your drive. As I said previously, with any form of login protection, all someone has to do is either boot your PC from a live boot disk, or take your drive out and connect it to anothe rPC to be able to read any non-encrypted data.

What tenforums members recommend time and again is this: once you have a stable installation- that's as soon as you've configured a user after a clean install for example- routinely use disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free/paid). Restart that sequence after each new Win 10 build fror Windows images.

Then you are protected against disk failure, ransomware, bad upgrades, theft, flood, fire- if your backup drive is kept separately.

Encryption is supported in Pro upwards through bitlocker, but encrypting the O/S can cause its own problems.

There are other means of creating encrypted vaults- areas on a drive for personal data. Best to keep that off C: anyway, so I tend to suggest that rather than Bitlocker.
