There is, however, a downside. Using WUB seems to attract the installation of KB4023057 which installs a Windows Remediation Service (sedsvc) and appears to have a similar function to the Windows Update Medic Service.
I have never used WUB. I have used some commands extracted from Sledgehammer. I have been successful in doing the following:

I have been using Task Scheduler to run a VBScript file which will update Windows Defender in the background without the following downside:

Another downside of WUB is that Windows Defender updates are also blocked.
And I have been using another VBScript file to check for other updates, also in the background.

Care to share the VBScripts you're using? I've no doubt they would be helpful to many.

I'm surprised this tutorial hasn't been updated yet; the powershell gallery has an updated version of this module; is this older version really better than the newer one, does it work better?

Also, while this sounds useful, I tried it, it hung on the list of installed windows updates, wouldn't list any windows updates that were/are available, and when I tried to use Uninstall-Module -Name PSWindowsUpdate, it kept saying this module is in use. The only way I could get the module gone was to manually delete it from the powershell module folder in the program files, not the c:\windows\windowspowershell folder
