Hi, I tried using the "remove take ownership" reg file but it didn't work. I also tried deleting the reg files manually and nothing. How do I solve this?

    Thanks in advance.

Hello hlvt, and welcome to Ten Forums.

Just a few questions to see what may be happening.

Did you use this same tutorial to add the "Take Ownership" context menu, or was it added from some other source?

In addition, are you signed in as an administrator?

    Any error messages?

    "Access Denied" 0x80070005

Hello, I have successfully utilized your registry edit to give myself the ability to delete windows folders from my storage drive. I had no issue there and I was pleased with the results. However, after that point I noticed that I could not install programs and my windows update failed to initialize. The only error code I could find was this "0x80070005" from the windows store when trying to install windows 10 apps. I did not attempt to take ownership of any folders or files on my primary SSD that I boot from, so I'm not sure why I would be seeing any issues. I also used your tool to remove the registry edits, but it did not see any changes after that so I reinstalled your registry changes thereafter.

Additionally, after hours of troubleshooting I did set the C:\program files (x86) file and all sub-folders to be owned by "trustedinstaller" which allowed me to install non-windows app programs, but this did not get windows update back up and running either.

I'm only assuming the issue started here, as I had been using windows update earlier yesterday and I had updates pending restart for installation before using your reg edits and that's when the problem began (I already cleared windows update downloads).

Any assistance would be highly appreciated!!

Try restoring Windows to a point before the problem began.

I had updated to windows version 2004 a day prior. I think I may just use an ISO to downgrade to version 1909 and upgrade again whenever it prompts me to in the future.

Your problem seems to lie in the upgrade rather than "Take Ownership".
Also, version 2004 is optional. See Doing Windows update vs. installing new Windows version ?

*I don't mean to hijack this thread if my issue is unrelated. I can take my issue elsewhere.

I'm not very technically inclined, I'll be the first to say it. I upgraded to 2004 manually because windows update would not allow me to update past version 1803 (newer version was needed for ray tracing to work, just got an RTX card). Everything seemed to be working well initially, I'd installed games and programs after doing that.

I just downloaded an ISO for version 1909 to try and fix whatever issue I'm having, but it mentioned that all of my programs would be deleted because it was a downgrade. So, I looked into system restore points and tried to restore to two days ago before I upgraded to version 2004, however the restore failed because of the aforementioned error code 0x80070005.

Now I'm a little stuck, I really would not like to reinstall all of my programs, especially since some of them are impossible to reinstall without rebuying them now.

Edit: I uninstalled my antivirus and I was able to successfully complete a system restore, however I still have the same issue oddly enough.

    Good afternoon @Brink
When taking ownership of a folder, why is this registry string added?
    Code:
    "AppliesTo"="NOT (System.ItemPathDisplay:=\"C:\\Users\" OR System.ItemPathDisplay:=\"C:\\ProgramData\" OR System.ItemPathDisplay:=\"C:\\Windows\" OR System.ItemPathDisplay:=\"C:\\Windows\\System32\" OR System.ItemPathDisplay:=\"C:\\Program Files\" OR System.ItemPathDisplay:=\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\")"
    Thanks

    Hello bamajon1974,

That registry entry tells the context menu to not appear for those specified folders since taking ownership of those folders could cause issues. Basically, to help prevent mistakenly causing harm to one self.
