I currently have .423 and I have tried .388/.423/.450 ISOs, but all failed. I guess, the clean install is inevitable.
Your screenshot shows you are not running 2004, build 19041.

You are running the Insider version 20H2 build 19042.423.

If you try an in-place repair upgrade with a 2004 19041 ISO then its actually a 'downgrade' and explains why you aren't allowed to keep anything. You'd need to get a 20H2 ISO from somewhere like UUPDump.

    Question:
    What are the differences between
Windows 10 installation USB flash drive, as discussed in this tutorial
Windows 10 rescue USB flash drive (mentioned in other forums and apps)
Windows 10 recovery drive made by Windows 10 system in W7 Backup program
If these 3 are identical why not stick with the last name?
    Thanks

    Hello Frank,

Windows 10 installation USB = Can install, reset, or refresh Windows 10, and includes WinRE (Windows Recovery). Basically, the best option since it includes everything.

Windows 10 recovery drive = Just includes WinRE. Cannot install Windows 10. If you include Back up system files to the recovery drive, you can also use to reset Windows 10.

Windows 10 rescue USB = Depends on the source.

Thanks Shawn, I get terribly confused by all these W10 restore, reset, reinstall, repair and fresh install topics, not to mention all the different versions and builds available.

Is it possible to do the in-place repair without the upgrade?

As long as you are using the same version number ISO as the Windows you have installed. If you have version 1909 installed, then you need to do the repair with a version 1909 ISO file.

If 1909 is installed and an in place upgrade repair is performed with a 1909 iso it should not upgrade to 2004.
Upgrades to 2004 can appear with the windows upgrade assistant or using a Windows 10 2004 iso.

It worked after spending a little time finding 19H2.
