How to Turn On or Off Show Definitions Inline in Microsoft Edge in Windows 10


Microsoft Edge is a new web browser that is available across the Windows 10 device family. It is designed for Windows 10 to be faster, safer, and compatible with the modern Web.

Starting with Windows 10 build 17713, Microsoft added a new dictionary function in Microsoft Edge, so you can look up definitions for key words in Reading View, Books, and PDFs. You can then choose to have a word read aloud to you to hear the correct pronunciation or expand more details from the definition.

This tutorial will show you how to turn on or off showing definitions inline for Books, Reading View, and PDF files in Microsoft Edge for your account in Windows 10.

OPTION ONE

Turn On or Off Show Definitions Inline in Microsoft Edge in Microsoft Edge Settings


1. Open Microsoft Edge.

2. Click/tap on the Settings and more (Alt+X) button (3 dots), and click/tap on Settings. (see screenshot below)

3. Do step 4 (off) or step 5 (on) below for what you want.


 4. To Turn Off Show Definitions Inline in Microsoft Edge

A) Click/tap on General on the left side, and turn off Show definitions inline for on the right side. (see screenshot below)

 5. To Turn On Show Definitions Inline in Microsoft Edge

This is the default setting.

A) Click/tap on General on the left side, and turn on Show definitions inline for on the right side. (see screenshot below)

B) Check (on) or uncheck (off) Books, Reading View, and PDF files for what you want to show definitions inline for these items.

The downloadable .reg files below will modify the string value in the registry key below.

Dictionary Enabled string value

yes = Turn on "Show definitions for"
no = Turn off "Show definitions for"

Book Dictionary Enabled string value

yes = Turn on Show definitions for "Books"
no = Turn off Show definitions for "Books"

ReadingView Dictionary Enabled string value

yes = Turn on Show definitions for "Reading view"
no = Turn off Show definitions for "Reading view"

Pdf Dictionary Enabled string value

yes = Turn on Show definitions for "PDF files"
no = Turn off Show definitions for "PDF files"

E) When finished, go to step 4 below.

4. Save the .reg file(s) to your desktop.

5. Double click/tap on the downloaded .reg file to merge it.

6. When prompted, click/tap on Run, Yes (UAC), Yes, and OK to approve the merge.

7. You can now delete the downloaded .reg file(s) if you like.
