otherwise the only thing i can suggest is changing function discovery provider host and function discovery resource publication to automatic.

    that often helps with discovery.
Actually I have already done that. Even created a batch file to run on the computers that were not visible. In what I found "function discovery provider host" was fine when starting automatically but "function discovery resource publication," after starting automatically, in the bat file it had to first be stopped and then restarted for it to do any good. That worked for a little while but then after another MS update or two even that stopped working as intended. Right now they are both set to automatic again but the problem persists.

    Thanks for your help.

Great news manoj91, and welcome to Ten Forums.

I gave up and use a NAS connected to a router to share items on devices connected to the network now.

OK, I give up. Basically I can see shares on a Win10 desktop from a Win10 laptop on the same net, but not vice versa. Garden variety home network. Four systems, single router, all systems LAN attached. Two Win10 systems and two Win8.1 systems. Sharing folders on the Win10 systems is giving me fits.
    · The error is consistent, Network Error window, Windows cannot access \\MYWIN10LAPTOP
    · I am now automatically logged into my MS account at boot time for both.
    · I confirmed I am the using the same MS account for both systems.
    · The desktop local shares are all as expected. [using fsmgmt.msc to look]
    · Both the desktop and laptop have local shares that are visible locally in FM
    · I can see the remote shares on a Win8.1 desktop from both Win10 systems
    · I am denied access to my laptop from a Win8.1 desktop [network error popup]
    · I Still can’t access MyWin10Laptop from my Win10 desktop [network error popup]
    · I am the admin on both systems
    · Each system has a different computer name
    · Both use a PIN for startup
    · Both are Win10 Pro 1909 systems, 18363.1016
    · Both are LAN attached to the same router.
    · I don’t see anything odd when I step through the tutorial on both systems
I can't believe this is this difficult. I have to be missing something really simple but just can't see it.
    Any ideas?

    desertdad,

Do they all have the same WorkGroup name?

Since the network has both Win10 & other version computers, have you installed SMB?

Both machines on the same Workgroup. Both machines SMB settings look like the attachment. Both systems started as clean installs.
    Thanks,
    Dick

Sorry, the attachment didn't show up. SMB 1.0 Auto Removal = unchecked, Client = checked, Server = checked, SMB Direct = checked, on both machines, I just verified.

I did too, have 2 x 2TB WD MyCloud drives connected by Ethernet to the Router and can access from Wired or Wireless Windows, Linux and my MacBook Pro until it died.

OK, OK, I guess I'll start looking at NAS. This is a pain. Currently I use the shared port on my router with a 32G thumb drive. That works as advertised for small stuff across all four systems. I think NAS will just be faster, bigger and more expensive.

    A consolidated network setup checklist

    Dick,

I cannot see what is missing from your list now that you clarified the two points I asked about. I've consolidated my own notes and this is what I did to set up my own network [between Windows 10 computers without any drive being connected to the router as a network drive].

1 Set the same WorkGroup name on each computer - Change Workgroup - TenForumsTutorials

2 Create a local Admin account on each computer with both the same username and the same password. This can actually be an MSAccount but a local one is normally less prone to errors and it's always a good idea to have a spare, password-protected local Admin account as a hedge against possible user profile corruption in the future.

3 Set up all Control Panel, Network and Sharing Center, Advanced sharing settings - including
4 Share the desired folders - Share Files and Folders Over a Network - TenForumsTutorials
    In brief,
    - In File explorer, right-click on the folder, Properties, Sharing tab, Advanced sharing
    - Set the checkbox for Share this folder
    - Give it a Share name
    - Click on Permissions,
    - Everyone - Set Full control, Change or Read as desired

5 If a network includes earlier Windows versions or a network drive then I understand SMB1 needs to be set up but this is not a topic I know about - Enable SMB1 File Sharing Protocol - TenForumsTutorials

6 Connect each computer to the router's network and set it up as a Private network - Set Network Location to Private - TenForumsTutorials
    - This connection step assumes use of Windows defender. If you use different security software then you should check if it requires any additional steps, such as manually approving use of specific network adapters, but I imagine they are all pretty decently automated these days and would at least tell you if they were rejecting a network / network adapter.

7 Access the shared drives both ways between each pair of computers & provide network credentials
    - Enter the common local Admin account username and common password {the one set up on each computer at step 2 above}
    - Set the Remember my credentials checkbox so that you are never required to do this again
Share Files and Folders Over a Network in Windows 10-network-credentials-called-cleaned.png
    - You will be able to access the shared drives using all other user accounts not just the Admin account used to set it all up.

    @Brink,

Perhaps you could consider using my post #108 as the basis of a tutorial on setting up networks. Rather than replace or alter any existing tutorials, it could simply serve as a central checklist of steps that are explained in each of them.
