I can't disable Driver Updates in Windows Update using Group Policies. I'm on Windows 10 Home. I'll go ahead and download the Disable_Drivers_in_Windows_Update.reg file and do it that way.

    Thanks for the info, Kbird.

Then your problem isn't really a technical problem. And you will face it with increasing frequency. You will face it every 6 months when Microsoft updates windows 10.

Microsoft simply doesn't care about your problem --- because they determine that this is a security issue to have so many computers with outdated drivers. So Microsoft creates the DCH driver model (which is the official Microsoft technical term and realtek UAD driver is a DCH driver).

You can complain about this problem for another 33 years until you reach 100 years old --- Microsoft will not care about your so called problem.
I'll have you know that ALL of my drivers are up to date. Letting Microsoft automatically download and install them isn't the only way to do it.

Even that seems to be whack-a-mole because Microsoft is constantly changing their update mechanism.

Official realtek WHQL UAD drivers are released more frequently than WHQL HDA drivers on MUC. And I am pretty much like you --- preferred to update drivers manually without windows update. Doing it my way doesn't prevent you from going to MUC and downloading the drivers and installing them yourself --- months ahead of Microsoft doing the updating for you automatically.

Relying on unofficial driver depository is a thousand times worst on a security level than letting Microsoft updating your driver automatically.

You made your point. Now would you PLEASE stop pushing the UAD drivers! Where's a mute or block button when ya need one.

You want to see my point.

The latest HDA driver on MUC is 6.0.8791.1 dated September 2. The latest UAD driver on MUC is 6.0.8816.1 dated October 14.

And I find it highly irresponsible for the rest of you to advocate to a newbie poster to go registry diving.

I've made edits to the registry long before joining TenForums, buster.

Windows 10 is pissing me off! Got up this morning and lo and behold found that overnight Windows automatically downloaded and reset my driver back to version 8639.1 even though I have "Do you want to automatically download manufacturers' apps and custom icons available for your devices? in Device Installation Settings in System Properties/Hardware set to NO."

    Hi Rhiannon,

Instead of Shawn's excellent tutorial Enable or Disable Driver Updates in Windows Update in Windows 10, which denies installation of new drivers for all devices, you have a second option, to prevent installation of a specific device, in your case the Audio device.

You can start by looking at this article, on how this can be done.
I have been using this Group Policy setting to prevent Microsoft from updating my Intel(R) 9 Series Chipset Family SATA AHCI Controller Driver and it's been working flawlessly for the past couple of years.

Now this can be done through Policy Editor, by changing the setting "Prevent installation of devices that match any of these device IDs", but unfortunately you don't have it since you're on Windows Home.
If you want, you can download the Group Policy Settings Reference Spreadsheet from Microsoft, to do exactly what the Group Policy Editor does, via Registry settings.

So I took the liberty to create the following two reg files, to enable and disable the setting.
In the Enable reg file, I presumed that your Audio device Hardware ID is "HDAUDIO\\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0235". If it's not, according to the steps followed in the article above, please open the reg file with notepad and change the last line with the correct Hardware ID.

Prevent installation of new drivers for Audio device: Enable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg
Allow installation of new drivers for Audio device: Disable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg

    warning   Warning
Please have in mind that once you follow this solution you will not be able to update your driver, neither automatically via Windows Update, nor manually by applying a downloaded driver.

To be able to manually update your driver:
    1. Disconnect from the internet
    2. Run the Disable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg
    3. Update your Audio driver and
    4. Run the Enable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg to prevent MS from updating it.
    5. Reconnect to the internet

    HTH

    Update:
Sorry I forgot one vital step, with which I updated the Warning above!
Before using this process, please disconnect from the internet, update your driver to the version you want, apply the Enable_DeviceInstall_Restrictions.reg file and then reconnect to the internet.
