Cant open BMP files for viewing from explorer

When double clicking .bmp image files in windows explorer or select "Open With" either MS Paint or default image viewer or third party like Irfanview and they wont open.

Perhaps has to do with registry HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT.bmp and change something there, i tried to fix, but end up deleting that key completely yet still cant open.

    a. What are bmp files currently associated with?
    b. Open e.g. paint- if you drag the bmp into its GUI, does Paint display it properly?
    c. To restore the default association, then from the huge searchable Tutorials section (do have a look, very worthwhile) I found this for you:

Restore Default File Type Associations in Windows 10

Option 2 - use the one for bmp

If they fail to open when you use Open with then the problem has nothing to do with

Are any .bmp files opening correctly?

.bmp files cannot be posted in this forum but you could zip one up and post that so others can see if they open in their computers.

I will assume you mean by double clicking the bmp file.

I have XnView MP installed. If I rt click the bmp file, Open With XnView MP, the bmp file is displayed by that,

You have the portable version it seems. How have you assigned that as your default handler for bmp?

It seems you are saying you do not have aproblem if Paint or 'windows image viewer' (whatever that is??) is the default.

    Is that correct?

Please be very clear about your statements otherwise it's hard to guess.
At any time you try to view the file..
    - how you are trying to open it
    - which program is assigned as default.

but when i select open with XnView MP it does not open.
How do you have an 'Open With' optiion for a portable program?

Yes it opens in Paint and Windows image viewer trough "open with", but not in XnView MP if i open with or double click
in windows explorer (Right now i set default XnViewMP). If i do Start > Run (Windows Key + R) and type "c:\Portable\XnView\xnviewmp.exe" "c:\downloads\myimage.bmp" it opens in XnView MP, so problem is with windows.

Really? right click > open with > choose another app > more apps > look for another app on PC > browse and find XnView Potable executable.

Excuse me... no need to make comments like that, thank you. I had to check.

    I wish you good luck.

In case someone else has this issue, this reg file solves it, need to put proper path to executable though.

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Classes\Applications\xnviewmp.exe\shell\open\command]
    @="\"C:\\Portable\\XnViewMP\\xnviewmp.exe\" \"%1\""

Why would they NOT when you ask a question like that.

At any rate bitmaps (bmp) files should open without issues, so probably something the OP did in the registry, or the files were corrupted to begin with.

And I create lots of .bmp files from snips with Snagit, and they open without issue with whatever viewing app I choose.
