Snip & Sketch No Longer Opens

    Hi.
    Long-time reader, first time poster.

Snip & Sketch was working nominally up until sometime recently.
That is to say it went something like this:
    • I'd press +Shift+S and the screenshot overlay would appear
    • I'd capture what I needed (and curse aloud at the unbelievably-intrusive notification )
    • Snip & Sketch would open and I'd carry on from there.

Now When I hit +Shift+S the overlay appears and the screenshot is captured to the clipboard but Snip & Sketch doesn't open, and there is no notification (well, thank goodness for that, anyway).

Initiating the screen capture from within S&S loads the image into the editor but that, of course, is entirely beside the point. I need it to work from without using a keyboard shortcut.

I did some digging and have found the same issue being reported in various other forums, but none of the solutions presented so far have worked for me. I've resorted to using third-party screenshot apps (which are actually really good) but sometimes I just want the speed and integration of the Snip & Sketch workflow, even though it lacks basic features.

    Any ideas?

Hello helmanfrow, and welcome to Ten Forums.

If you haven't already, you might see if resetting the Snip & Sketch app using the method in the tutorial below may fix it.

    Reset App in Windows 10

If not, then you can try the command for the Snip & Sketch app in Option Two of the tutorial below to reinstall and re-register the app.

In addition, check for app updates in the Microsoft Store app to see if a new version of Snip & Sketch may be available.

Hey, Brink, thanks; it's good to be here.

I should have been more detailed in my original post.

I've attempted three fixes so far without success:
    • Uninstall/reinstall + restart
    • Apps & Features > Advanced > Reset + restart
    • Re-register through Powershell + restart

    I'm open to more ideas.

In the meantime I can recommend three alternatives:
ShareX is Free Open Souce with a ton of features although it requires some customization.
Greenshot is also FOSS, also very good
FastStone Capture is proprietary, not free ($20) but it requires the least customization and has the most complete and most tightly-integrated feature set and the quickest workflow (in my opinion). To be fair I used a crack for many years until I felt guilty and bought a license.

I've been bouncing between all three for years, actually, but since Snipping Tool and Snip & Sketch came about they became my default capture tools. Now I'm

When I capture a snip using Win+Shift+S, a notification pops up and clicking on that opens the editor - but if notifications is turned off, it just files the snip away in the clipboard silently - I guess that is intended behaviour. There is a specific 'snip & sketch' notification.

The behaviour you're describing seems exactly as expected, except you don't get the notification- maybe you have that notification disabled.

    See
Take a Screen Snip with Snip and Sketch in Windows 10

This matches your experience if in fact you are comparing the behaviour of the previous Snipping tool:

You're right—I had notifications disabled. I must have turned them off and forgotten about it.

More troubling is the fact that my memory of the workflow was fuzzy. I remembered Snip & Sketch opening on its own, without my having to click on the notification but in fact it requires that interaction. Maybe I was remembering things the way I wish they had been; Namely that S&N would open silently without that ding-dong annoying notification obscuring my screen and hanging around for way too long.

    Anyway, nominal behaviour is restored.
Thanks for reminding me that I don't know everything and that my mind is slipping :).

Glad it's resolved - and nothing to fix. Sometimes tools don't work as we'd expect or hope- it's a matter of finding one that suits.

The hotkey and timed function are useful for capturing things like the start screen or context menus or tooltips- things that vanish if you click elsewhere on the screen.

    SOLVED! Thanks

I had researched all over as to why i would Win+Shift+S and not get the pop-up which I could then click on and edit, your solution was the answer as I had notifications on Do Not Disturb, undid this and hey presto it is working again - I was pulling my hair out with this so thank you!
