Can't run Compatibility Troubleshooter - why is that?

1. There may be a corruption in the PCW - Program Compatibility Wizard Folder in Windows System

2. If you simply select the settings you require for Battle Chess Game of Kings
rather than running the troubleshooter - does that allow the game to run as you wish
Depending on version it is I think 7 or 8
Older were even back to XP and some before that

3. Have you by any chance moved the location of your User Account App data - Temp folders

4. It could be system file corruption although in your case I doubt it.
However I recommend you run a system file check
sfc /scannow
and see if all is in order

If not I then suggest a DISM - deployment Imaging servicing
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

That did not work - if it did not as it was not the troubleshooter - are you saying the game would still not run.

Antivirus: Windows Defender, Norton Internet Security
which is the active one please
I have no real knowledge of Norton, as I have never used it, but I do know that it can be - perhaps more "blocking" than many other AV`s
Have to checked to see if by any chance disabling it - Norton - allows the troubleshooter to run.

If I try to use the PCW from the context menu on any .exe

I read that as it is ONLY the PCW that fails on the context menu (right click) whilst other context options on exe files are OK.

After, of course, trying the suggestion from Callender if it does not solve it and ALL other options on context menu for exe files work then it is IMHO either a situation for you to bear with, and see how it is after a version update is issued, OR try a Repair Install of 10 from within Windows. In other words a reinstallation of Windows keeping all files and programs as is.

I know you have dismissed my suggestion of Norton - but even although you say it cannot be Norton, as you tried in Safe Mode, I still think you should check Norton - for instance - allow that aspect to run.



Finally I am still unsure if you got the Battle Chess to run using NOT the troubleshooter but the option below that on your screenshot
Compatibility Mode - Run his program in etc.
as I suggested on my first reply and asked again on my post 4.

I do appreciate that you have dismissed my suggestion, but I again offer to you that

I am able to force the PCW from the program (see arrow) directly.
It works, but *not* from the right-click Context Menu - (0x80004005 error) and that is the issue.

which I presume you looked at from the screenshot in my post 2.

That, insofar as being able to run it from there, but not from the context menu and the context menu returning
context restricted
again suggests to me that it is a protection by Norton.

and as stated in the Norton briefing notes on their website - "if all protection of Norton could be disabled simply by booting into Safe Mode then our product would not be doing what it was designed for" - this was in answer to a question regarding Norton apparently preventing a process - albeit not the one in question here.
