Apps missing and cannot repair or reinstall

Calculator is about the only Microsoft App I use but I frequently find it missing from the list:

But it's worse on this occasion. I've previously successfully used the following (obscure) Powershell command, which restored all apps:

    Get-AppXPackage -AllUsers | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage-DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}

That no longer works. Nor the more complex instructions here:
How to re-add missing apps to the Start menu in the Windows 10 Fall Creators Update | Windows Central

When I try to run it (either from the calculator keyboard button or by typing calc.exe into the run box) I get this message:

Name:	CalcAppProblem-1.jpg
Views:	21
Size:	11.1 KB

Proceeding consistently ends up with this:

Size:	32.4 KB

The same happens if I try to install the alternative 'Calc Pro HD Free'.

    Very frustrating!

    Hello Terry,

Are you able to reinstall the Calculator app from the Microsoft Store at the 2nd link below from Microsoft?

(I'd already tried the Settings/Reinstall/etc route.)

Thanks, but No. In that non-alphabetic list of 600-700 free apps I eventually found two calculators, Calculator 2 and Calculator X8. Both gave exactly the same behaviour. They all appear to download, then almost install, then download again, and so on, until I give up.

In that case, you might see if resetting the "Microsoft Store" app may allow it to successfully download and install.

No, as I said, I’d already tried that as the obvious first step.

Resetting the "Microsoft Store" app is not the same as what you mentioned in your first post.

Sorry, you're right, I misunderstood. But unfortunately that too was unsuccessful.

However, good news. Once again I tried that PS command - and it worked!

I've no idea why, but some guesses:
    1. Following your Feedback Hub reset essential before the PS script would work?
    2. Last night there was another WU, taking me from 1803 17134.706 to 17134.765?
    3. I'd made a mistake in my copy/paste (from an archived 'Tips' txt file) and this time had used the one from your very useful article Reinstall and Re-register Apps in Windows 10
    4. None of the above...

Anyway, very glad to have it back again!
